Second Half Swing Pushes Zips Past Falcons
AKRON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team took on the MAC-preseason favorite Akron Zips Friday night (Jan. 5) on CBS Sports Network. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, building a 14-point advantage in the first half. However, the Zips came fighting back after halftime to claim an 83-67 final. The loss closes out an eight-game winning streak for the Orange and Brown while moving the team to 10-4 on the season and 1-1 within the Mid-American Conference.
Marcus Hill led the Falcons with 19 points, one of four Falcons to hit double-digits in the scoring column. Jason Spurgin followed with 14 points, filling the stat sheet with five rebounds and a team-leading four assists. Rashaun Agee and Trey Thomas rounded out the list with 12 points each while Agee added a team-leading six rebounds.

Marcus Hill led the Falcons with 19 points, one of four Falcons to hit double-digits in the scoring column. Jason Spurgin followed with 14 points, filling the stat sheet with five rebounds and a team-leading four assists. Rashaun Agee and Trey Thomas rounded out the list with 12 points each while Agee added a team-leading six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons won the opening tip and proceeded to get the first bucket with Da'Shawn Phillip hitting a triple from the corner. Rashaun Agee got a layup soon after for BGSU to go up 5-0 in the early going.
- Akron hit a three before Jason Spurgin got an offensive rebound and went back up for two, making it a 7-3 BGSU lead at the first media timeout.
- BGSU tallied the first points out of the media break with Marcus Hill hitting a three. Akron answered with one of their own to bring it to a 10-7 score.
- Spurgin showcased his touch in the paint with a soft hook-shot followed by a Trey Thomas hesitation for the layup to push the advantage for the Falcons to 14-7. Akron worked to close the gap to 16-11 entering the under-12 media break.
- Out of the media timeout, Thomas scored eight of the next 11 points for the Falcons, getting an acrobatic layup to fall before hitting back-to-back triples. The one basket not from Thomas came off his assist with Spurgin hitting a three to push the score to 27-17 with a double-digit BGSU lead, extending to 29-17 at the under-8 media break.
- A 5-0 run for the Zips worked to chip away at the Bowling Green lead, trimming it to 34-27 before the next Falcon basket. The seven-point margin stayed up to the final media timeout of the first half with the score at 36-29.
- The Falcons maintained their advantage through the first half, taking a 41-36 score into halftime.
- Akron opened the second half with a three to cut the lead to two, 41-39, but the Falcons answered with a jumper from Hill at the free throw line.
- The next possession saw a hustle play and assist from Thomas on a corner three from Spurgin. Agee was able to get a second chance basket to make it a 7-0 BGSU run and 48-39 lead.
- Akron was able to tally a 5-0 run to trim the lead down to 51-48 at the under-12 media timeout. The run extended to 9-0 to swing the score to Akron, 52-51 to force a BGSU timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Hill hit a free throw to tie the score at 52-52, but the Zips tallied a 12-0 run, making it a 25-4 stretch, to move ahead 64-52.
- The Falcons worked to trim the lead, including an and-one for Agee to cut the lead down to 68-61.
- Akron was able to reestablish their advantage with a 13-2 stretch to push their lead to 81-63, holding on for an 83-67 final score.

- Two Falcons hit assist milestones in the first half. Jason Spurgin tallied three first half assists to bring his career total to 100 at the halftime break. It was a similar story for Trey Thomas, registering two to push his career assist total to 101 at the midway point.
- Spurgin added five rebounds to his stat line, bringing his career total to 500 at the collegiate level. He also tallied 14 points, including two threes.
- Trey Thomas hit double-digit points for the Falcons with 12. He added a season-high and team-leading three steals.
- Rashaun Agee hauled in a team-high six rebounds for the Falcons, marking the fifth straight game he has led the team in the stat.
- Marcus Hill led the Falcons in scoring with 19 points for the Orange and Brown while playing all 40 minutes of the game.
- The loss ends the eight-game win streak for BGSU, the longest for the team since 2019-20 and the eighth-longest winning streak in the nation.
