Starters Stuff Stat Sheet As Falcons Bounce Back Against Bobcats

All Five BGSU Starters Hit Double-Digit Points For Second Time This Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team defended the home floor Tuesday night (Jan. 9) capturing an 83-78 victory over the Ohio Bobcats inside the Stroh Center. After a close first half, BGSU carried a three-point lead into the half and was able to build on it in the second half. A 19-5 stretch during the second half bolstered the Bowling Green lead. Clutch corner threes from Jason Spurgin and free throw shooting down the stretch secured the win to move the Falcons to 2-1 in MAC play, 8-1 at home and 11-4 on the season.
For the second time this season, all five BGSU starters hit double-digit points in the game. Trey Thomas topped the scoring column with 20 points and added five assists, but it was Rashaun Agee who stole the show. Agee tallied a career-high 15 rebounds, the most by a Falcon since the 2020-21 season, while logging 12 points and a career-high six assists. Marcus Hill filled the stat sheet with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Spurgin was hot down the stretch, totaling 14 points with four threes, including three in the final six minutes of action, along with four assists and two blocks. Da'Shawn Phillip rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points in addition to a pair of steals, a pair of rebounds and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons scored the first points of the game with a layup from Marcus Hill. Ohio answered with a 5-0 run, but BGSU soon reclaimed the lead at 10-9 to begin trading leads between the teams.
- A 5-0 burst for Bowling Green swung the score in their favor 15-11, but the Bobcats worked to tie it up at 17-17 with the Falcons taking a 19-17 lead into the second media timeout of the first half.
- The battle continued through the media timeout with the ties extending to 24-24 and then 26-26 at the next media break following a slam by Jason Spurgin off a Rashaun Agee assist.
- Out of the timeout, EJay Greer hit a three for the Falcons followed by a Trey Thomas jumper to make it a 7-0 BGSU run and 31-26 lead.
- Ohio again tied it up with a 5-0 run, this time at 33-33, but another three for BGSU, this time from Spurgin, pushed the Orange and Brown in front 36-33. Just before the buzzer, Agee had a tip-in layup to grant the Falcons a 38-35 lead at the half.
- Hill got the second half started for the Falcons with a three. Trey Thomas added a layup before Agee had a big put-back dunk to jump start a BGSU run.
- After the dunk, Agee hit a three the next time down the floor to make the score 48-42 with a 5-0 run on his own.
- Ohio hit a three, but Thomas answered with one of his own from the corner. After Thomas' three, Da'Shawn Phillip got a fastbreak dunk to push the BGSU lead to 53-45 with a 10-3 stretch.
- The momentum stayed with the Falcons. Phillip converted an and-one opportunity followed by a jumper from Thomas for a 5-0 BGSU run and a 58-47 lead.
- Hill added two layups to keep the BGSU run going, extending it to 9-0 with a 62-47 advantage to make it a 19-5 stretch for the Falcons.
- A 10-0 run for Ohio trimmed the lead down to single-digits at 62-57. The Falcons tallied a basket, but OU continued to push to bring the score to 64-61 at the under-8 media break.
- A 7-1 run for Bowling Green worked to rebuild their lead to 71-63, but Ohio cut down the deficit again, getting it to 74-71 at the under-4 media.
- Out of the media break, Ohio added two free throws to make it 74-73 before Spurgin hit a three followed by a Hill free throw to expand the lead to 78-73.
- Spurgin got another three to fall to make it 81-75. The teams traded points down the stretch at the free throw line leading to the 83-78 final.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- With the win, BGSU is now 11-4, the best start to a season through 15 games since beginning 2014-15 with the same standing.
- In addition to being 11-4 on the season, the Falcons are 8-1 at home. The 8-1 standing is the best home record through nine games for BGSU since starting the 2019-20 campaign 8-1 as well.
- As a team, the Falcons set new season-highs as a team for assists (20) and three-pointers made (12). The last time BGSU had 20+ assists was against Ohio Dominican last season on Dec. 29, 2022 with 25.
- Logging four assists in the first 13 minutes of game time, Rashaun Agee brought his career assist total to 100. He finished with a career-high and team-leading six assists in the game to push his career tally to 102.
- Agee also posted his fifth double-double of the season, playing a career-high 33 minutes. He logged 12 points and added a team-leading and career-high 15 rebounds to his stat line, including eight on the offensive end. The 15 rebounds are the most by a Falcon since Daeqwon Plowden had 18 against Miami (OH) on March 2, 2021. Agee completed his stat line with his first made three of the season.
- Trey Thomas tallied a team-high 20 points for BGSU, his second 20-point game of the season and the 11th by a Falcon this year. Thomas also made a career-high eight field goals in the game.
- Jason Spurgin recorded 14 points for the Falcons, including a career-high four threes. Of the four threes, three came in the final six minutes of the game and two in the final two-and-a-half minutes. Spurgin added four assists, matching his season-high, as well as the two BGSU blocks in the game.
- Da'Shawn Phillip hit double-digit points for the first time this season, finishing with a season-high 10. Phillip is the 10th different Falcon to put up double-digit points in a game this season. Phillip added a season-high four field goals to his stat line.
- Marcus Hill rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Orange and Brown with 15 points. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals to fill the stat sheet.
- For the second time this season, all five starters for Bowling Green reached double-digit points, doing so on Dec. 22 against Siena Heights as well. Prior to this season, BGSU hadn't done so since the 2018-19 campaign.
- The Falcons are now 10-0 on the season when scoring 70+ points and 5-0 when scoring 80+ points.
- With 578 students in the crowd, the Ziggyville Population marked the highest student attendance for a non-Toledo game in over a year
