Top MAC Defenses To Square Off At Stroh Tuesday Night As BGSU Welcomes Ohio

BGSU, Ohio Enter With Top Two Defenses In The MAC For Opponent Field Goal Percentage
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team returns home to the Stroh Center Tuesday night (Jan. 9) to host the Ohio Bobcats. The Falcons enter the matchup with a 10-4 record on the season and a 1-1 record within the MAC. BGSU is also off to a 7-1 start at home, tied for the second-best home record in the MAC with Ball State and behind only Akron (6-0).Â
Opening Tip
The Falcons and Bobcats will be meeting for the 154th time in program history with BGSU leading the all-time series 84-69. The game will feature Bowling Green's No. 2 defense in the MAC (68.1 points per game) going against Ohio's No. 2 offense in the MAC (79.1 points per game). The matchup will also put the top two defenses in the MAC for opponent field goal percentage on the same court with BGSU topping the list (41.9%) and OU in second (42.6%).Â
At The Game
Tuesday's game will be the Welcome Back Party for students returning to campus for the spring semester. The first 250 students at the game will receive a free hat. There will also be pizza for students available above the student section and a DJ. Additionally, the game will be the Meserve Cup for student-athletes and Rashaun Agee will be recognized pre-game for eclipsing 1,000 career points at the collegiate level.Â

Ohio is off to a 1-1 start within the Mid-American Conference. They began MAC play with a loss to Toledo, 86-77, before topping Northern Illinois, 78-66. On the year, Ohio is an even .500 with a 7-7 record. However, they've lost three of their last four. In addition to falling to Toledo, the Bobcats also came up short to Davidson and Austin Peay. Ohio is paced by Jaylin Hunter, averaging 14.4 points per game. He's joined by Shereef Mitchell (13.1), Elmore James (12.3) and AJ Clayton (12.1) with James averaging a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per game as well.Â

For the second-straight game the Falcons are bound for a defensive battle. Bowling Green and Ohio are currently the top two teams in the MAC for opponent field goal percentage. The Falcons top the stat sheet, holding their opponents to a mark of 41.9% from the field. Ohio follows the Orange and Brown at 42.6%. As for points allowed, BGSU is second (68.1) while Ohio is fourth (71.1).Â
Winning In Different WaysÂ
Holding a 10-4 record entering the week, the Falcons have found various ways to win. Through 14 games, Bowling Green has used seven different starting lineups and have won with six of them. Of the seven different starting lineups, four of them hold an undefeated record when being called on. Marcus Hill and Jason Spurgin are the lone Falcons to start all 14 games this season with eight different players receiving at least three starts this season.
70-Point Threshold
Through the first 14 games of the season, BGSU has tallied 70 or more points in nine games. In those nine contests, the Falcons are an undefeated 9-0. Marcus Hill is topping stat sheets for the Falcons and he's worked his way into the Top 50 in the nation for multiple stats. Entering the week, Hill is currently 19th in the nation for points per game, 32nd for free throws made, 35th for free throw attempts as well as field goal attempts, 38th for field goals made and 41st for total points scored. Hill also leads the MAC in free throws made and is second for points per game.Â
