Hounding the Huskies
Michigan Tech will enter the weekend having just split with Arizona State a week ago, playing on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 4 and 5). Prior to traveling to face the Sun Devils, the Huskies kicked off their second half of the season at the Great Lakes Invitational, winning the tournament following victories over Michigan State and Michigan. The three wins granted Michigan Tech a spot in the USCHO Top 20, slotting in at No. 17, marking the first time this season the Huskies have been ranked. Statistically, Alec Broetzman paces Michigan Tech offensively, leading the team in points with 16 and goals with 10. In goal for the Huskies, Matt Jurusik ranks No. 17 in the country for goals against average with 2.14 and No. 21 for save percentage with .920.
The Series At A Glance
This weekend will be the second series between the Falcons and Huskies this season as they split earlier in the year. Being Bowling Green's first WCHA series of the season back on Oct. 25 and 26, the Orange and Brown claimed a 3-1 victory in the first game while Michigan Tech battled back on Saturday for a 4-2 win. Sweeps have been scare of late between the teams with the last regular season sweep dating back to the 2016-17 season when the Huskies claimed two. However, just last year, Bowling Green topped Michigan Tech in consecutive days, being on March 8 and 9, in the first round of the WCHA playoffs to advance to the semifinals.Â
Last Time Out
To begin the 2020 portion of the schedule, the Falcons faced off with Northern Michigan last weekend with the Wildcats claiming wins both Friday and Saturday. Friday ended in regulation with a 5-2 final while Saturday's game needed overtime to decide a winner. NMU netted two goals with their goalie pulled in the final two minutes of the third period to force overtime. With 47 seconds left in overtime, Northern Michigan pushed the puck into the net for the 4-3 win.Â
Around the WCHA
With the release of the USCHO polls, the WCHA claimed four spots in the Top 20. In addition to Bowling Green and Michigan Tech being No. 16 and No. 17, respectively, Minnesota State held on to the No. 3 spot with Northern Michigan moving into the No. 19 slot. In the upcoming weekend, Alabama Huntsville and Bemidji State begin the weekend early with a Thursday-Friday series. As for the standard Friday-Saturday series, Ferris State hosts Minnesota State, Northern Michigan hosts Alaska Anchorage, Alaska hosts Lake Superior State and of course Michigan Tech hosts Bowling Green.Â
Hauser For Hobey
Alec Rauhauser continued to improve his resume for the Hobey Baker Award. With a three-point performance on Saturday, Rauhauser concluded a four-point weekend, moving him into the team lead for points, assists and plus-minus. Currently averaging 1.05 points per game, Rauhauser is ranked fourth in the nation for the category among defenseman. He also was named WCHA Defensemen of the Week following the performance against Northern Michigan, his third time this season earning the recognition in addition to being named WCHA Defensemen of the Month in both October and November.Â
Kruse-ing Into The Record Book
Junior Brandon Kruse has now tallied a point in five straight games, including nine of the last ten. Over the span he has three multiple-point efforts, totaling 12 points over the last ten games. The run has increased his career point total to 94 as he looks to become the second Falcon this season to reach 100 career points and the 73rd in program history. If he can hit the milestone this season he would join Alec Rauhauser, marking the first time two Falcons reached the milestone in the same season since 1995-96 when five players hit the mark.Â
Mad Max Making A Run
Not far behind Brandon Kruse in career points, Max Johnson has caught fire of late, scoring at least one point in five of the last six games, including two multiple-point efforts during the span to have a total of seven points over the six games. With the recent surge, Johnson is now up to 88 career points as a Falcon, placing him third on the active roster behind Kruse and Rauhauser. Last year, the final leg of the season proved to be the high point for Johnson, scoring 14 of his 43 points during the month of March alone.
Powered By The Power Play
Over the course of the season, the Falcons have netted 27 power play goals accounting for nearly 40% of the team's scores this season. With a .257 power play percentage, Bowling Green is currently ninth in the nation and second in the WCHA behind only Minnesota State. Over the 22 games played, the Orange and Brown have capitalized on the power play during 15 games, being 10-4-1 when they score with the man advantage.Â
