Falcons Double Up DePaul, 2-1, Tuesday Afternoon

Terry, Painter strike less than 3 minutes apart in road win
CHICAGO, Ill. – Trace Terry and Bennett Painter scored second-half goals less than three minutes apart as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team defeated DePaul University, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 23). The non-conference matchup took place at Wish Field.
Enzo Gil made six saves for the Falcons (3-3-2).
All three goals in the match came in a span of under seven minutes. Terry gave the Falcons the lead on a wonder-strike with exactly 57 minutes elapsed. Then, just 2:19 later, a nifty pass by Ryko Bodurov freed Painter for a goal that doubled the BGSU lead.
The Blue Demons (2-2-5) cut that lead in half just over four minutes later, however, on a Noeh Hernandez free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. But, Gil and the BG back line would not let the hosts find the equalizer.
DePaul had advantages of 23-9 in total shots, 7-3 in shots on goal and 10-1 in corner kicks. Clayton Brooks had one save in goal for the hosts.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons now lead the series with DePaul by a 5-0-2 count. DePaul's goal in the second half of Tuesday's match was the first ever surrendered by BGSU in the series, as the Orange and Brown had blanked DU over the first six-and-two-thirds games.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU had a great chance early, as off of a throw in, Bennett Painter fired a shot from just outside the box that seemed ticketed for the upper-right corner, before DU goalkeeper Clayton Brooks made a leaping save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.
• Enzo Gil's first save of the match came in the 18th minute, as he went to the ground to stop a low shot from the top of the 18 by Noeh Hernandez. Gil then made a nice stop on Nathan Laird on a counterattack several minutes later.
• Early in the second half, after a handball call on the Blue Demons, Andrew Shaffer played a free kick toward the box. The ball was blocked to Caue Ramos, who fired a shot that was just wide, hitting the outside netting.
• In the 56th minute of the match, the Falcons pushed forward on the left side, working the ball into the penalty area, but back-to-back shots by Ryko Bodurov and Mads Christensen each were blocked.
• The Falcons took the lead with exactly 33 minutes remaining in the second half. Trace Terry saw Brooks off of his goal line, and the BGSU All-American took advantage. Terry fired a shot from distance on the left side, and the blast found the far side of the net to give BGSU the lead. The goal came after Aiden Messinger had gotten his boot on a DePaul throw in, playing it toward midfield. Shaffer knocked the ball ahead to Terry, who led the ball bounce once before hitting a hard volley over the 'keeper and into the net.
• Less than three minutes later, the Falcons doubled the lead. Shaffer put the ball ahead to Bodurov, who made a nifty move to elude a defender, then slid a pass to the onrushing Painter. Painter ran onto the pass on the left side of the 18-yard box and hit a low shot that beat Brooks and found the far side of the net.
• Only two minutes after Painter's goal, Gil made a big save on DePaul's Hernandez, who had gotten behind the BG back line.
• But, DU cut the lead in half in the 64th minute. After a foul on the Falcons just outside the box, Hernandez put a free kick into the top of the net to get the Blue Demons on the board.
• Under 14 minutes remained when Jayden Waski fired a hard shot from the right side, but Gil parried the shot away, and moments later, another DU shot attempt sailed well over the bar. Gil made another leaping stop on Hernandez with under 10 minutes to go.
