Terry strikes early for second-straight match as Falcons share the points with Wildcats
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team played to a draw against a nationally-ranked team on the road Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14), battling the University of Kentucky to a 1-1 result at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
Senior Trace Terry scored just over six minutes into the match for the Falcons (2-2-2). The host Wildcats (3-0-2), ranked #18 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll, tied the score on a Bertil Albin tally just under a half hour into the match.
BGSU's goal came at the 6:10 mark. As the Falcons put pressure on the Wildcats deep in the UK end, freshman Caue Ramos stole the ball just outside the penalty area. Ramos poked the ball ahead to junior Bennett Painter, who took a touch and slid a pass to Terry. Terry, with a pair of defenders converging, quickly slid and knocked the ball past goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon.
Alban tied the score at the 29:21 mark. After a UK corner kick, the ball curved toward the far post, and Albin settled it before firing a shot that deflected off of a BGSU defender and into the goal.
Junior Enzo Gil made seven saves in goal for the Orange and Brown, while Conlon had three stops for the Wildcats.
NOTES & NUMBERS
• Trace Terry's goal was the 22nd of his career, moving him into sole possession of 13th place on the BGSU list. He now has 55 career points, and is tied for 15th on that Falcon chart.
• Bennett Painter now has eight assists and 44 points in his career. Painter is now 28th on the BGSU career points list.
• Painter has scored those 44 points in just 39 career matches.
• This season, Terry has four goals and eight points to lead the Falcons in both categories, while Painter has six points on two goals and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trace Terry's goal, described above, came on the first shot attempt of the day for either team. He scored at the 6:10 mark after scoring just 4:47 into the Falcons' previous match, a 1-0 win over Michigan State on Sept. 5.
• In the 12th minute, Aiden Ptacek won a corner kick. That corner was knocked out of the box, but Caue Ramos settled the ball and quickly fired a shot on goal, forcing Kentucky goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon into a save just under the crossbar.
• The Wildcats equalized on the Bertil Alban goal, which came off of a corner kick.
• Late in the first half, Ryko Bodurov and Joshua Saavedra – the Falcons' only two substitutes on Sunday – worked a combination play that led to a Painter shot just outside the 18-yard line, but Conlon was able to make the save.
• Early in the second period, UK's Bains Smith cut into the penalty area and took a shot from the right side of the six-yard box that nearly trickled into the far corner. BGSU 'keeper Enzo Gil pushed the shot wide with a headlong dive, but Gustav Renman was near the far post. Renman blasted a shot, but Giovanni Soares was there and blocked it out of play.
• Several minutes later, BGSU's press nearly paid off for a second time in the match as Painter poked the ball away from a UK player at the 18-yard line. Terry tried to quickly play a return pass to Painter, but the ball was just out of his reach and Conlon was able to grab it as a Wildcat defender shielded Painter from the ball.
• After a foul on the Wildcats near midfield with 18 minutes remaining, Anthony Hernandez played a long ball into the box on the ensuing free kick. The ball was chested down by a defender, and Saavedra ran onto it and quickly slid a pass to Terry. Terry's quick shot from just inside the 18-yard line was stopped by Conlon, who made a kick save. Painter pounced on the rebound, but his shot was blocked by a defender.
• Several minutes later, Saavedra blocked a shot by Alban with a headlong dive. Saavedra was momentarily shaken up, but remained in the game.
• Under 12 minutes remained when Gil went to the ground to grab a hard, curving shot off the boot of Josh Gordon.
• With under six minutes on the clock, Joaquin Brizuela received a pass in the semicircle at the top of the box, whirled to his left and hit a low shot that rolled just wide of the right goalpost.
• One minute remained when Kevin Larsson took a left-side pass, settled the ball and quickly fired a shot from the center of the penalty area, but Gil was up to the task, making the save on what would prove to be the final shot attempt of the afternoon.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return home to face Bellarmine on Saturday evening (Sept. 20). That contest will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free to all BGSU regular-season matches.
• Then, BGSU will head to Chicago for a match vs. DePaul on Tuesday, Sept. 23. That contest will start at 3:00 p.m. ET.
