THE STARTING XI
I – The Falcons are 2-2-1 on the season after a 1-0 victory over Michigan State last Friday (Sept. 5) at Cochrane Stadium. Trace Terry scored less than five minutes into the match, and goalkeeper Enzo Gil and the Falcons kept the Spartans off of the scoreboard. GIl had six saves in goal in the win. Speaking of Gil...
II – On Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 9), Gil was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week, earning that honor for the second time in three weeks. The Falcons have had a conference award winner in each of the first three weeks of the season, as Terry was named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2. Gil's first Defensive P-O-W honor came on Aug. 26.
III – Terry leads the Falcons with three goals and six points this season, while Bennett Painter has five points, including a pair of goals. In goal, Gil has 32 saves, a goals-against average of just 0.60 and a pair of clean sheets.
IV – Currently, Gil leads the MVC and ranks second in the entire nation in both totals saves and saves per game (6.40). He also leads the conference in save percentage (.914).
V – Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff – assistant coaches Gonzalo Carranza, Jack Bennett and Ryan James – have a total of 12 returning student-athletes on the 2025 roster. That group includes six starters from a year ago. A whopping 15 newcomers have joined the Falcons in 2025.
VI – BGSU finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 12-6-2, and the Falcons went 4-3-1 in their second season in the MVC, tying for third place in the then nine-team league. The Orange and Brown picked up wins over UIC and Drake to advance to the championship match of the MVC Tournament, before falling in overtime to Evansville.
VII – Four of the top-six point-scorers from the 2024 club are back. The returnees include a pair of forwards who combined for a whopping 25 goals and 59 points last fall. Painter led the team with 13 goals and 30 points in '24, while Terry had 12 goals and 29 points. The duo combined for nine game-winning goals. Terry was named to the All-MVC First Team, and Painter earned all-league second-team honors.
VIII – Terry was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team last season, and also was chosen to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Third Team. Terry was named to the TDS Preseason Best XI Third Team in 2025.
IX – Last December, Terry was chosen by Seattle Sounders FC in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft. He is the first player in program history to return to the Falcons after being drafted, and is the fifth player in history (and the first since 1999) to come back for another season after being named an All-American.
X – Terry was named to the United Soccer Coaches Forwards to Watch list this season – one of just 20 players to be so honored. Additionally, the Falcons were picked to finish second in the MVC in 2025, and Painter, Terry and Andrew Shaffer and Terry all were named to the Preseason All-MVC Team.
XI – Terry is now tied for fourth in career game-winning goals (nine), tied for 13th in career goals (21) and deadlocked for 19th in career points (53) at BGSU.
