Throwers, Freshmen Highlight First Outdoor Meet for Falcons

Neal wins shot put and discus, Haintz wins hammer, seven Falcons make outdoor collegiate debut
OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons competed at the Blizzard Buster on Friday, March 17, opening the 2023 outdoor season at Miami University's meet. The throws group was outstanding for the Orange and Brown, with Zaresha Neal winning the shot put and discus, and Mateya Haintz winning the hammer. Reagan Emberton placed fifth in the shot put and 11th in the discus, while Katherine Mendenhall, Jenna Lucas, and Destiny Fernandes finished fourth, fifth, and 11th in the javelin.
Lucas was one of seven freshmen making her outdoor collegiate debut, a group that included thrower Kami Baker. DaMya Barker and Ashley Kisor recorded the same time in their debuts, tying for seventh in the 400. Bianca Staples, Morgan Patterson, and Sabrina Imes all made their first career appearance, with all three racing the 100. Senior Katerina Shuble competed unattached and won the 800.

After a weekend off, Bowling Green splits to end March and begin April. On March 29-April 1, a group will head to Austin to compete in the Texas Relays. On March 31-April 1, the remaining Falcons will travel to Cincinnati for the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational.

Falcon Facts
- Mateya Haintz competed in the hammer for the first time as a Falcon, winning the event with a mark of 184-0 (56.08m).
- Zaresha Neal won the discus with a mark of 164-11 (50.26m), which is the 21st-best mark in program history. Neal holds 14 of the top 25 discus marks in BGSU history.
- Neal added another first-place finish for the Falcons, winning the shot put with a mark of 51-3.25 (15.63m). This is 23rd in school history, giving Neal 11 of the program's best 25 marks.
- Katerina Shuble ran the 800 unattached, winning the race in 2:18.16.
- Katherine Mendenhall had a PR in the javelin, throwing 106-11 (32.60m) and placing fourth.
- Jenna Lucas made her collegiate debut in the javelin, recording a mark of 102-2 (31.15m) to finish fifth.
- Also making their collegiate debuts were Ashley Kisor and DaMya Barker, who tied for seventh in the 400 (1:00.71).
- Freshmen Bianca Staples (12.76), Morgan Patterson (13.09), and Sabrina Imes (13.27) all competed in the 100 in their first outdoor collegiate meet.
- Kami Baker competed in her first collegiate outdoor meet, placing 16th in the discus (32.21m).
- Raegan Burkey ran the 1500 for the first time in her collegiate career, finishing in 4:58.65.
- The Falcons had seven runners in the men's 5K, including Josh Risko and Christian Gagliardi, who each had a PR.
