Falcons Come Up Short In Doubleheader Against Zips

AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team took on the Akron Zips in a doubleheader on Friday (March 17) after a schedule change to the weekend series. The Falcons worked to gain a 4-2 lead in the first game of the day, but a late surge by the Zips pushed Akron out in front to take the first game 5-4. As for the second game, Akron tallied a three-run second inning to take an early lead. The Falcons chipped away with a run in the sixth, but couldn't overcome the deficit, falling 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
- Akron scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. With runners at the corners, the Zips laid down a sacrifice bunt to go up 1-0. A double in the next at-bat extended the Akron lead to 2-0.
- The Falcons got on the board with a three-run top of the fourth. Nathan Archer began the inning with a walk followed by a Nathan Rose single to put two on with no outs for the Falcons. Tyler Ross laid down a bunt to move the runners up before Justin Fugitt was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
- With the bases loaded, DJ Newman sent a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Archer to cut the Akron lead to 2-1.
- In the next at-bat, Jack Krause reached on an error by the first baseman with both Rose and Fugitt scoring on the play to push the Falcons out in front 3-2.
- In the top of the sixth, Ross was hit by a pitch and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Newman delivered a two-out single through the right side, scoring Ross to add an insurance run to BGSU's tally, 4-2.
- The score stayed until the bottom of the eighth when four straight singles tallied a run for the Zips. A sacrifice fly followed to tie it up at 4-4.
- With runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth, Akron scored the winning run on a wild pitch, taking the 5-4 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
- The first run of game two crossed for Akron in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded hit by pitch. A single followed in the next at-bat to score the second run. A third run scored on a fielder's choice throwing error, making it 3-0 Akron after two played.
- In the top of the sixth, Sam Seidel singled followed by a Kyle Gurney double to put runners on second and third for the Orange and Brown. A sacrifice fly to left by Nathan Archer scored Seidel to cut into the lead 3-1, but that would be the extent of the scoring for game two.

- Starting the first game of the day for the Falcons, Gage Schenk tossed six innings for the Falcons, matching his season-high, and struck out a season-high nine batters.
- DJ Newman had a strong day at the plate for the Falcons, going 2-for-6 with two RBI and two stolen bases, his first two base swipes at the collegiate level.
- Isaiah Seidel has now made two relief appearances for the Falcons this season, hurling 4.2 innings total without allowing a run in either outing and striking out three.
- Nic Good made his season debut for the Falcons, logging the final out in the bottom of the eighth.
