Akron Drops Falcons, 5-1
October 22, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Fernandez Garrido's second-half goal not enough to offset UA's offensive output
AKRON, Ohio – Two early goals gave the University of Akron a cushion, and the Zips went on to a 5-1 win over Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Friday night (Oct. 22). The Mid-American Conference match was held at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Falcons (9-3-2, 2-1-1 MAC) held advantages of 19-14 in shot attempts and 12-5 in corner kicks, and in fact BGSU controlled much of the possession over the final two-thirds of the match.
But, Jason Shokalook scored against the run of play no fewer than three times for the Zips (8-3-3, 2-1-1 MAC), dashing any hopes of a BGSU comeback.
Akron's first two goals came within the first 14 minutes of the contest, and then Shokalook's first tally of the night came with just 3:33 left before halftime.
Roberto Fernandez Garrido scored the Falcons' lone goal, off of a nifty combination play with Jacob Erlandson.
For Fernandez Garrido, the goal was his fifth of the season, tying him with Erlandson for the team lead.
QUOTING COACH NICHOLS
"We didn't start the game with the right energy and we got stung. Â Once we got up to the pace of the game we were actually good, but by then the damage had been done. This game will ultimately make us a better team."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 5' | The Zips put a pair of crosses into the box, but BGSU goalkeeper Logan Kowalczyk was up to the task each time, knocking one out of the box with a sliding kick and punching the other away.
• 7' | After a foul on the Falcons deep in BG's defensive end, the Zips fired a pair of shots from close range, but both were blocked by the Falcon defense.
• 8' | GOAL | Off of a free kick, the ball was played toward the far post. a shot by Jonas Buechte hit Will Jackson, who was standing on the goal line, and Jackson knocked the ball into the net.
• 11' | BGSU's first shot of the night came from Alberto Anaya, but the ball was hit directly at Akron goalkeeper Will Meyer, who was able to make the save.
• 14' | GOAL | The Zips doubled the lead as Ryan Kingsford scored after a steal by Diogo Pacheco.
• 15' | Kyle Cusimano took a pass and hit a shot from the top of the box, but it was blocked out for a corner kick by a lunging UA defender.
• 37' | After a free kick, Jacob Erlandson got his foot on a diagonal ball with a sliding effort near the six-yard line, but the shot went just over the crossbar.
• 38' | Off of another cross, another Erlandson shot from near the six-yard box forced Meyer into a reaction save.
• 42' | GOAL | Jason Shokalook headed home a Malik Henry cross on the counterattack.
• 43' | The Zips quickly threatened again, but Michael Montemurri knocked a cross out of the box with a sliding effort.

• 54' | GOAL | The Zips added to the lead, and like Akron's previous goal, it came against the run of play. Henry's cross was headed into the far side of the net by Shokalook.
• 64' | GOAL | BGSU got on the board, as Roberto Fernandez Garrido played a ball to Jacob Erlandson on the 18-yard line. Erlandson's one-timer put Fernandez Garrido into the box, and – with an Akron defender on either side of him – the striker poked the ball past Meyer and into the net.
• 65' | A long shot by Zach Buescher was stopped by Meyer near the left post.
• 68' | Erlandson made a nifty play to block a shot by Kingsford in the center of the box.

• 76' | Jensen Lukacsko made a run past several defenders and found Nathan Masters on the left side of the box. A Masters cross was deflected, but Nichols chested the ball down and hit a shot from near the penalty spot, in traffic. Meyer, however, was able to make the stop.
• 77' | Masters and Martinez pressed forward after a steal, but a Martinez shot was blocked out for a corner kick. Off of that Anaya corner, Montemurri's header was deflected out for another corner, and off of the latter corner, a Buescher volley was blocked out of play.
• 79' | Masters cut the ball back on the left side of the box and played a cross toward the far post, but the ball was just out of reach of the lunging Martinez.
• 80' | GOAL | And, after the Falcons had peppered the Zips with shots over a period of several minutes, Shokalook scored against the run of play yet again.
• 84' | Martinez blasted a shot out of the air after an Anaya serve was headed by a defender. But, the shot from 19 yards out whizzed over the crossbar.
