Falcons Score Three Unanswered Goals To Capture Overtime Victory In Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Â - The Bowling Green State University hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit on Friday night (Feb. 28) scoring three unanswered goals to defeat Alabama Huntsville in overtime with a 4-3 final score. Cameron Wright started the scoring for the Falcons with his 20th goal of the season. Alex Barber picked up from there with a power play goal in the second period to keep the Falcons within one heading into the third period. In the third, Will Cullen scored a delayed penalty goal to tie the game up. In overtime, it was Barber on the power play again that put the Falcons in the win column. With the win, the Orange and Brown are now 18-13-4 on the season and 13-10-4-3 in the WCHA. In the WCHA standings, the Falcons trail Northern Michigan by just one point after entering the game tied with Alaska for fourth in the standings.Â

Scoring Plays
- The first goal of the night was scored by Ben Allen with just over three minutes remaining in the first period. Allen was assisted by Daneel Lategan and Lucas Bahn.Â
- Less than a minute into the second period, Wright tied the game up for the Falcons, scoring an unassisted goal to reach the 20-goal milestone for the season.
- Nearing the halfway point of the second period, the Chargers reclaimed the lead with a goal from Brandon Salerno with Lategan and Bahn again assisting.Â
- Alabama Huntsville later extended their lead with a power play goal from Tyr Thompson. He was assisted by Christian Rajic and Tanner Hickey.
- Bowling Green then netted a power play goal of their own with Barber trimming the UAH lead. Barber was assisted by Brandon Kruse and Max Johnson on the score.Â
- With 11:18 remaining in regulation, Cullen found the back of the net for the Falcons on a delayed penalty to tie the game up at three goals apiece. Connor Ford and Casey Linkenheld were on the assisting end.Â
- Two minutes into the five-minute overtime period, Barber scored his second goal of the game and game-winner for the Falcons, once again coming on the power play. Kruse and Alec Rauhauser were the ones to assist the deciding goal.Â
Other Key Plays
- During the first penalty kill of the game for Bowling Green, Frederic Letourneau nearly had a short-handed goal on a breakaway attempt, but the UAH goalie was able to stop the puck.Â
- The effort continued for the Falcons offensively with a trio of attempts from the crease early in the first period, but Sinclair was able to stretch out to stop the puck for the Chargers.Â
- In total, the Falcons killed off three penalties in the first period before Alabama Huntsville took the lead with an even strength score.Â
- Both Wright and Cullen slammed the puck against the post in the second period on attempts that were almost Falcon goals.Â
- With 3:33 left in the overtime period, a tripping goal went against Alabama Huntsville, setting up Barber's game-winning goal on the ensuing power play.Â
Falcon Stat Facts
- With the first goal of the night for Bowling Green, Wright became the program's first 20-goal scorer since the 2007-08 season when Derek Whitmore had 27. He is also just one of seven players in the nation to reach the milestone so far.Â
- Barber's two power play goals on the night were his sixth and seventh of the season, the third highest total on the team. Just Wright and Ford have more with nine and eight, respectively.Â
- Scoring two power play goals, Barber logged his second multiple-goal game of the season and third of his career.Â
- The two power play goals by Barber makes the Falcons the first team in the nation to score 40 power play goals this season.Â
- Assisting on both of Barber's goals, Kruse logged career points 101 and 102 as he continued to move his name up the all-time point list in program history. Not far behind is Johnson who also assisted on the first, picking up career point 93. Rauhauser assisted on the second, being his 91st career assist and 119th career point, tying him with fellow defensemen Brian McKee for 53rd in program history.
- Ending with 58 shots on goal, the Falcons set a new season-high for the category, previously set at 54 on Dec. 6 in a 9-3 win over Alabama Huntsville. Those two games are the only times Bowling Green has had 50 or more shots on goal this year.Â
- The win marks the first time this season the Falcons have captured a win after trailing at the end of the second period and makes them even in overtime games at 4-4-4.Â
- The Orange and Brown scored four goals on the night, moving them to 9-0-0 when scoring four or more goals this season.Â
- The unbeaten streak for the Falcons is now at seven games with a record of 5-0-2, now the third longest active streak in the nation behind Bemidji State and Cornell at eight games each.Â
- With the win, the Falcons are now 27-6-3 all-time against the Chargers.Â

- Bowling Green will conclude the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 29) with an afternoon matchup with Alabama Huntsville. The Falcons and Chargers will hit the ice at 4:07 EST to round out the schedule.Â
