BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In the rubber match of the series, the Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 8-4 contest in 10 innings to the University of Toledo. The Sunday (April 9) thriller was played at Steller Field in front of a season-high 472 fans. Toledo tied the game in the ninth, and then scored four runs in the 10th to win the ballgame.
With the defeat, Bowling Green drops to 8-19 overall, and 4-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Toledo improves to 10-22 on the season. The Rockets are also 4-5 in conference play.
"They made one more play than us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Zac Carey pitched his butt off, and we absolutely showed some fight by climbing out of the early deficit, but we left way too many runners in scoring position. On multiple occasions, we had two guys in scoring position with less than two outs, and we just couldn't cash in. Give Toledo a lot of credit, they made the plays and scored a lot of runs with two-out hits."
After Toledo scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, Bowling Green stormed back with four unanswered runs. The comeback started in the sixth with a Greg Basalyga solo home run to left field.
Bowling Green was a little unlucky in the frame, as the inning started with a leadoff walk. Randy Righter then hammered a pitch that bounced off the pitcher, starting a 1-4-6-3 double play. With two outs and nobody on, Basalyga promptly homered for his team-high fourth dinger on the season.
In the seventh, Bowling Green scored twice to even the score at 3-3. With runners on the corners and no outs, Nick Glanzman beat out a double play, allowing Justin Mott to score. Jake Wilson then shot a single into left-center, putting runners at the corners once more. With two outs, Glanzman scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the eighth, it was another passed ball that allowed the Falcons to take the lead. Righter scored from third this time to give BGSU the 4-3 lead, but with runners on second and third with only one out, Bowling Green failed to capitalize further.
Toledo's Dalton Bollinger sent the game into extra innings with a solo home run in the ninth, and then gave the Rockets the lead for good with a two-out, two-RBI double in the 10th. A.J. Montoya followed the double with a two-run home run.
Zac Carey pitched into the ninth inning, but exited after two hits in the inning. Carey logged 8.0-plus innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out three and walking none. Kody Brown and Nathan Lohmeier each posted 0.1 innings of scoreless ball, while Tony Landi was the victim of the four-run 10th after pitching out of a jam in the ninth.
Righter went 3-for-5 from the plate for the Falcons. Basalyga and Glanzman posted one RBI apiece, while Mott went 1-for-3 with one run and two walks.
Bowling Green will host Kent State in non-conference action on Tuesday (April 11) afternoon at Steller Field. The game is scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m. Bowling Green will then travel to Muncie on the weekend for a three-game series at Ball State.
