Falcons Host Kent State Tuesday In Non-Conference Action

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opens the week with a non-conference home game against Kent State University on Tuesday (April 11) afternoon. The ballgame from Steller Field is scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. The game will be Bowling Green's second-to-last midweek home game of the season.
"We are definitely disappointed that we were not able to take the series against Toledo last weekend," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But that is part of the ups and downs of the conference season. We are excited to play Kent State this week. Even though they are not on our conference schedule, it's still important for us to play them each year.
"Obviously, they have been a great program for a long time, and our kids want to play against the best competition possible. We've really been testing ourselves this year with tough midweek games. We had Michigan scheduled, and then we will be going to Ohio State later in the season. These games are very important, and you want to be playing good baseball heading into the weekend."
The Falcons are 8-19 (4-5 MAC) on the season, and have won at least one conference game in all three series to this point. Offensively, Justin Mott leads the Falcons with a .302 batting average. He's on a five-game hitting streak. Greg Basalyga is hitting .293, and leads the team in extra bases (40) and slugging percentage (.488).
Randy Righter has come on strong as of late, and is on an eight-game winning streak. His batting average is up to .272 on the season, while Jake Wilson leads the Orange and Brown with 15 RBI.
Tyler Anderson is coming off one of his best starts as a Falcon, as the junior right-handed pitcher led BGSU to a series-opening victory over Toledo on April 8. The right-hander pitched a career-best 7.1 innings, and recorded a season-high five strikeouts. He issued just two walks, and picked up his second win on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.96 on the season with his stellar start.
Kent State is 17-10 (5-1 MAC), but Tuesday's game will be the Golden Flashes' first since an April 5 loss to Ohio State. Kent State elected not to play this past weekend. Kent State is hitting .317 as a team, and KSU has nine players hitting over .290. The Flashes are averaging 6.48 runs and 11.51 hits per ballgame.
The Golden Flashes own a 4.03 team ERA, and are allowing 4.59 runs and 8.03 hits a game. Kent State has five players on their roster with ERA's below 4.00. Weekend starter Joey Murray is having an incredible season. In seven starts, he's 4-0 with a 1.70 ERA. He has 55 strikeouts in 37.0 innings pitched.
This weekend, the Falcons will head to Muncie, Indiana for a three-game series at Ball State. The Falcons and Cardinals will begin the series on Friday, April 14, with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The series will conclude with 1 p.m. ballgames on Saturday (April 15) and Sunday (April 16).
