BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Behind junior Randy Righter's 5-for-5 day at the plate, the Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated Kent State University on Tuesday (April 11) in a non-conference matchup at Steller Field by a score of 9-3. The win marked Bowling Green's first regular-season victory over Kent State since 2014. The Falcons scored once in the first inning, and led for the remainder of the ballgame.
Bowling Green improves to 9-19 overall with the win, while the Golden Flashes of Kent State drop to 17-11 on the season with the loss. "I thought we played a complete game today," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We made nice defensive plays, turned double plays, threw runners out on the base paths. We had big innings, and put pressure on Kent State throughout the day, and all three of our pitchers were fantastic.
"There is no doubt about it that Kent State has been one of the premier teams in college baseball for a while now. We have a ton of respect for them. This is the most talented team we've played since opening at Texas A&M, so this is just a great win for us. The key now will be finding a way to bring this type of effort to Ball State this weekend."
Bowling Green scored as quickly as possible to take a 1-0 lead, as freshman Jake Wilson led off the bottom of the first with his first-career home run. Wilson pulled the ball to right-center, and scored one of his two runs on the day in the process. He finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
In the second, the Falcons broke things open with a five-run frame. Redshirt-sophomore Jeff Scott and redshirt-senior Nick Glanzman, who went 2-for-4 with a run, started the rally with consecutive one-out singles. Wilson was then hit by a pitch, before sophomore Riley Minorik dropped a two-RBI single into center field, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Cam Daugherty followed the single by scoring Wilson with a sacrifice fly. Daugherty fell behind in the count with two quick strikes, but went on to work a full count prior to lifting a fly ball to center field. Righter was next in line, and gave Bowling Green a 6-0 lead with a two-run blast to right.
Righter finished the day a triple shy of the cycle, and upped his batting average to .306 with the five-hit effort. The junior is currently on a nine-game hitting streak. He's also recorded one double in four-straight contests. Over his last 11 games, Righter is 19-for-46 (.413) at the plate with a staggering .674 slugging percentage. On the day, Righter set career highs in hits (5) and total bases (9).
The Golden Flashes got on the board with a single run in the fourth, but Bowling Green quickly responded with a two-run bottom half to take a commanding 8-1 lead. With two outs and two men on base, senior Greg Basalyga smacked a two-RBI double that hit the fence in left-centerfield.
Basalyga picked up his third RBI of the game when his sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Falcons an 8-2 lead. Basalyga went 2-for-3. Along with their run in the fourth, the Golden Flashes tallied runs in the fifth and seventh.
Freshman Chandler Stillings got the start for the Orange and Brown, and tied his career high with a 4.2-inning effort. He scattered seven hits, and allowed just one earned run (two total runs), while striking out two and walking two.
Sophomore Brad Croy took over for Stillings in the fifth, and left the bases loaded in the frame, eventually logging 2.1 innings of one-run ball. Croy, who picked up his first win of the season, allowed two hits, struck out two batters, and issued one walk. Freshman Nathan Lohmeier secured the win for BGSU by posted 2.0 innings of hitless baseball. He walked one batter, and carved up three.
Bowling Green's nine runs tied its season high. The Falcons also scored nine runs in a series-clinching victory at Northern Illinois on April 1. The Falcons out-hit the Golden Flashes, 13-9. Both ball clubs committed one error apiece.
Bowling Green travels to Muncie, Indiana this weekend to take on the red-hot Ball State Cardinals. Ball State has scored 10-plus runs in four-consecutive games, and last weekend, the Cardinals swept Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The series opens on Friday (April 14) with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The Saturday (April 15) and Sunday (April 16) games are slated for 1 p.m.
