BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Western Michigan University on Saturday (March 19) afternoon at Warren E. Steller Field. The Broncos took the first game by a score of 3-2, and the second game by a score of 11-0. The two victories completed the four-game weekend sweep of the Falcons.
Bowling Green is now 7-13 on the year, while Western Michigan improved its record to 5-12.
"There's no doubt about it -- we have to play better baseball," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "The most important weekend of the year, to this point, is right around the corner. After Tuesday's game, we open MAC play at Eastern Michigan."
Game one – which lasted seven innings – went down to the wire, as Western Michigan overcame a 2-0 deficit and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to claim the 3-2 win.
Bowling Green scored its two runs in the second, as the Falcons scored off a wild pitch and a Greg Basalyga walk with the bases loaded. Hunter Clanin and Justin Mott scored the Falcons' two runs.
However, the Broncos plated a run apiece in each of the next two frames to knot the contest at 2-2. Andrew Lacinak gave the Orange and Brown a nice start, but took the loss in the ballgame. Lacinak logged 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.
The Falcons received hits from Kory Brown, Matt Smith, R.J. Williams, Randy Righter, Logan Giddings, Derek Drewes and Mott.
Game two, unfortunately for the Falcons, was not nearly as competitive. After four scoreless innings to open the game, Western Michigan scored four runs in the fifth to open up the game's scoring. The Broncos then plated three in the seventh, and four in the ninth to clinch the 11-0 victory.
Bowling Green starter Zac Carey, aside from the four-run fifth, pitched well. Two of the five runs scored off Carey were not earned. The right-hander last six innings, yielded seven hits, and walked two batters.
Western Michigan's Pat Haynes, Jacob Piechota and Matt McConnell combined for the shutout, allowing a total of six hits. Western Michigan notched 12 hits in the game.
In the ballgame, Bowling Green's hits were registered by Randy Righter, Tyler Greiner, Derek Drewes, Cody Callaway, Cam Daugherty and Dan Ferguson.
Righter and Drewes recorded one hit in both games, while Greiner – who came on to pinch hit in the ninth inning of the second game – picked up his second knock of the season.
The Orange and Brown will take on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Michigan on Tuesday (March 22) afternoon. The ballgame is scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. start. The Falcons will then open up Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan with a three-game set across March 24-26.
