Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team is set to tee-off its 2015 spring season on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 9-10, at the 2015 Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, California.
After a two-year hiatus the Barona Collegiate Cup returns in 2015 with a 13-team field including Bowling Green, Illinois State, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, South Dakota State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UT-Arlington and host Sand Diego State.
The tournament will be held at the par-72, 7,029-yards course at the Barona Creek Golf Club and will consist of 54 holes of stroke play over two-days. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, Feb. 9, and follow with a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
BGSU head coach Kevin Farrell will send out a familiar lineup in sophomores Jose Narro and Brett Rinker, seniors Ryan Triller and Joe Cooper, and freshman Cameron Michalak. All five played in multiple events this past fall; including at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in which the Falcons turned in a sixth-place team finish overall.
Narro, who led both the MAC and the Falcons over the 2014 fall season with a stroke average of 73.17, will look to continue to improve his game in just his second spring season and lead the Falcons to new heights in 2015. This past fall, the sophomore posted a low round of 66 twice and also carded four top-25 finishes, including a first-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational with a tournament low score of 206, -7 under par.
Rinker, another BGSU sophomore, will also look to continue his strong play this spring season. Rinker, who posted a stroke average of 74.39 over 18 rounds of play in the fall, was tabbed the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Freshman of the Year last season after a solid spring season. He turned in a low round 68 over his final round of play this past fall to finish in a tie for eighth-place at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic and earn MAC Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
One of two upperclassmen in the lineup, Triller will be counted on even more this season, as the senior played perhaps the best golf of his entire intercollegiate career this past fall, in which he turned in a low round 69 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate and did not post a single score higher than a 79 over 15 rounds of play. The senior will be asked to provide both leadership and consistency in the BGSU lineup throughout the spring season.
Cooper, who like Triller is a senior that will be asked to do even more in 2015, had an up and down fall season. The lefty began to get back on track as the fall season concluded, posting nine straight rounds in the 70's including a 71 and 72 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. One of only three returning Falcon golfers to compete in every event last spring, Cooper is by far the most experience golfer for BGSU in terms of participating in collegiate events over the last three-plus years.
Michalak, the lone Falcon in the lineup to make his spring debut at the Barona Collegiate Cup event, played in five events this past fall season. The true freshman posted a stroke average of 76.20 over 15 rounds of play in his first semester of play at BGSU which included a low round of 71 on two separate occasions.
Both days of play will begin with a 7:30 a.m. PT shotgun start.
