Lakeside, California – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team was just one of three teams, along with UC Riverside and Sacramento State, to complete both rounds of play on Monday due to darkness at the 2015 Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, California.
The Falcons carded a round of 286, -2 under par, over the first round of play, yet struggled in the second round of play with a team score of 309, +21, to conclude day one with a two-round combined team score of 595, +19.
The Falcons will enter the second day of play on Tuesday in 11th-place overall out of the 13 team field, which is not official as 10 teams have not completed the first 36-holes of play since the second round of play was suspended due to darkness.
"We turned in a solid first round of play. We played well over the first 18 holes of play, but we had to play 36 holes today and we didn't finish the day strong. We were not mentally focused over the second round of play," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We are not mentally tough right now, not tough enough to turn in a solid and consistent 36 holes of play in one day. I take responsibility for that. As the coach I've got to get these guys both physically and mentally prepared to play a long day of 36 holes in the same day."
Sophomores Brett Rinker and Jose Narro paced the Falcons on day one of play at the Barona Collegiate Cup on Monday.
Rinker posted rounds of 74, +2, and 72, even par, over his first 36 holes to finish day one in a tie for 27th-place overall with a combined two round score of 146, +2. He led the Falcons with seven birdies on Monday.
Narro carded a BGSU low round 69, -3 under par, over his first round of play, which included six birdies. However, he struggled with consistency in the second round, shooting an 80, +8, to finish the day in a tie for 44th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 149, +5. He also tallied seven birdies on the day.
Like Narro, senior Joe Cooper had a strong first round, shooting an opening round 70, -2 under par. Yet he failed to duplicate that score over his second round of play, turning in a second round 80, +8, to end day one with a combined two-round score of 150, +6, and in a tie for 53rd overall. The lefty posted two eagles and three birdies over his first round on Monday.
Freshman Cameron Michalak finished just two strokes behind Cooper with his 36-hole score of 152, +8, as he posted rounds of 73, +1, and 79, +7. The newcomer totaled three birdies over his two rounds of play and sits in a tie for 62nd-place overall heading into the final round of play on Tuesday.
Rounding out the lineup for the Falcons was senior Ryan Triller. Triller was the most consistent golfer for the Falcons on Monday, carding rounds of 77, +5, and 78, +6, to conclude day one in a tie for 68th-place overall with a two-round combined score of 155, +11. Like Michalak, Triller tallied three birdies overall.
San Diego leads the tournament field with a first round score of 278, -10 under par, and an incomplete second round team score of -5 under par through 16 holes of play.
The second round of play will continue with a 7:30 a.m. PT start time on Tuesday morning with the third and final 18-holes of play slated to begin immediately after.
The three teams that have completed round two in UC Riverside, Sacramento State and Bowling Green will also tee off round three at that time since the pairings will remain the same.
