Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team outscored Ferris State 42-24 in points in the paint and 21-10 in bench points, yet the Bulldogs shot 50 percent (9-of-18) from behind the three-point line and 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free throw line to hand the Falcons their first home loss of the season in an 82-68 upset win on Sunday afternoon at the Stroh Center.
With the loss the Falcons fall to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 at home on the year. The game counted as an exhibition contest for the Ferris State Bulldogs, who have won nine straight games counting the win over BGSU on Sunday.
"Obviously we got outplayed from the opening tip. All the credit needs to go to their staff and players. We knew coming into the game that we were playing a hot opponent. They had won eight in a row. From the video and scouting, they're a good basketball team. They proved it today," commented head coach Chris Jans. "At the end of the day, at halftime we were down one and it seemed more. In the second half we could just never get that run. We could never string consecutive stops together and it seemed like we would have a decent possession defensively and then as the shot clock was winding down they'd jump up and make a big shot to keep us at bay. So again all the credit needs to go to their program. Obviously it's a signature win for them and it's a step backwards for us."
Senior big man Richaun Holmes was 9-of-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe to lead the Falcons with 26 points, which matched his career-high, and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Jehvon Clarke added 13 points and three assists off the bench, while fellow guard Zack Denny had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were led by the duo of Drew Lehman, a Toledo native, and Josh Fleming, as the two poured in 29 and 23 points apiece, respectively, accounting for 52 of Ferris State's 82 points for the contest. Fleming also added a game-high 13 rebounds, while forward Jared Stolicker tallied eight points, three rebounds and five blocks in the win.
Despite outscoring Ferris State by 18 points (42-24) in points in the paint, 11 points (21-10) in bench points and 12-7 in second chance points, the Falcons couldn't slow down the hot shooting of the Bulldogs, who connected on 14-of-24 shots (58.3 percent) in the second half overall and 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from downtown to halt any chance of a BGSU comeback.
Ferris State opened up the game with three quick points from Fleming to take a 3-0 lead, yet the Falcons answered with jumpers from David Joseph and Anthony Henderson, followed by one free throw apiece from both Henderson and Spencer Parker to give the home team in white a 6-3 lead with 16:40 to play in the first half.
The Bulldogs would then run off seven straight points to take a 10-6 lead on a three-pointer from Lehman at the 14:59 mark of the opening half.
After pushing its lead out to five at 15-10 on a layup from Fleming with just over 12 minutes to go before the halftime break, BGSU responded with an old-fashion three-point play from Holmes, a layup down low on the block from Delvin Dickerson, and a jumper from the baseline from Clarke to retake the lead at 17-15 with 10:29 on the scoreboard.
An alley-oop from Joseph to Holmes pushed the BGSU lead to four at 19-15; however, the Falcons were unable to ride the momentum from the highlight play, as Ferris State used the three-ball and the free throw line to regain the lead at 20-19 with 8:07 to play in the first half.
Over the final 8:07 of the opening frame, the Bulldogs had an answer for every Falcons' basket, as BGSU was able to tie the score up at 24-24 on back-to-back free throws from Henderson, but couldn't wrestle away the lead from the visitors in red who took a 37-36 lead into the halftime break.
The Falcons opened up the second half with a turnover, which led to a three-pointer from Dietrich Lever of the Bulldogs, as Ferris State used a 13-4 run over the first three minutes of the second period to take a double digit lead at 50-40 on a three-pointer from Lehman at the 17:14 mark.
Bowling Green was able to cut the Ferris State lead to as low as eight at 56-48 on a dunk and free throw from Holmes at the 13:24 mark, yet the Bulldogs continued to answer with points of their own as another three-pointer pushed their lead back out to double digits at 59-48 with 12:28 to go in regulation.
The hot shooting of the Bulldogs proved to be too much, as BGSU got to within in nine points on two separate occasions at 59-50 and 61-52, only to see Ferris State answer with a bucket of its own to keep their lead in double digits for the final 10 minutes of the contest in the 82-68 win over the Falcons.
BGSU was 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the field overall, yet the Bulldogs were 27-of-55 (49.1 percent) from the field for the game.
However, Ferris State totaled 27 points from behind the three-point line on 9-of-18 (50 percent) shooting, compared to the Falcons' six points on 2-of-8 (25 percent) from long distance.
Ferris State also held a 19-14 advantage in points off free throws, as the Bulldogs were 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) compared to the Falcons' 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) shooting from the charity stripe.
BGSU was also out-rebounded by the Bulldogs 40-32 for the contest.
The Falcons (6-3) will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 28, as BGSU will fly south the face-off with the Bulls of South Florida at 3 p.m. ET. The game is slated to be broadcasted on ESPN3.
