
Falcons in Fourth at 2014 Rocket Classic

Port Clinton, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team recorded the third lowest team score in each of the first two rounds of play of the 2014 Rocket Classic on Monday at the par 72, 5,884-yards Catawba Island Club golf course in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Three teams – Western Illinois, Cleveland State and IUPUI - were unable to have all five of their competitors finish the second round of play due to darkness.
BGSU carded team rounds of 308 and 306 to finish day one with a 36-hole combined team score of 614, +38. The Falcons enter the final round of play on Tuesday in fourth-place overall out of the 13-team field.
"We had nine out of 10 rounds in the 70s today," said head coach Stephanie Young. "The team fought hard over 12 hours and 36 holes. It was a true test of golf and endurance."
Junior Lily Bartell led the Falcons on Monday, posting rounds of 74 and 79 to finish day one in a tie for seventh-place overall with a 36-hole combined score of 153, +9. Her first round 74, +2, is a season-low 18-hole score thus far this fall season. Bartell totaled three birdies over her first 18-holes of play Monday morning and totaled a combined 22 pars over the first two rounds of the two-day event.
Just one stroke behind Bartell's score of 153, +9, sits both Shelby Wilson and Mikayla Baer with identical scores of 154, +10. Both Wilson and Baer turned in scores of 78 and 76 over their first two rounds of play and will enter the final round of play tomorrow in a tie for 12th-place overall. On the way to her two-round combined score of 154, +10, Wilson tallied 20 pars and four birdies, while Baer finished day one with 18 pars and a team-high five birdies.
Rounding out the BGSU lineup is senior Patricia Holt and junior Hannah Lewis who are both tied for 18th-place overall with matching 36-hole scores of 156, +12. Holt, who carded 22 pars and two birdies over her 36-holes of play, recorded back-to-back rounds of 78. Lewis shot rounds of 80 and 76 on day one, which included 21 pars and two birdies on the par-4 number one.
Playing as individuals for the two-day event, Fran Rodriguez concluded day one in a tie for 30th-place overall with rounds of 81 and 79 for a combined 36-hole score of 160, +16, while freshman Madelynn Swank logged scores of 83 and 81 to finish the first day of play with a two-round combined score of 164, +20, good enough to stand in 42nd-place overall.
The Falcons are only 15 strokes behind the team leader in the Toledo Rockets, who are in first-place with a two-round combined team score of 599, +23, and just six shots out of second-place which is held by Western Michigan and the Broncos' combined 36-hole score of 608, +32. Ohio is in third-place overall with a two-round combined team score of 613, +37, just one shot in front of the Falcons.
With three teams left to finish one hole of the second round tomorrow morning, the third and final round is slated to start with a shotgun start at approximately 9 a.m.
