With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-2-0 on the season. The Mastodons drop to 3-4-3.
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Heuton made two saves as he and the BGSU defense recorded a second-straight shutout. BG now has six shutouts in 10 matches this year to date.
The scoring play began when sophomore Jacob Roth played a long diagonal ball from near midfield into the penalty area. Fellow sophomore Joe Sullivan and an IPFW defender elevated to play the ball as IPFW goalkeeper Cody Schweitzer came off of his line to contest the play as well. Sullivan got his head on the ball, deflecting it toward the left side of the box just before Schweitzer joined the fray. Multiple players went to the ground as Baraldi collected the ball on the left side of the penalty area. The senior took a touch and fired a shot into the vacated net.
"We try to be both patient and urgent," said Baraldi. "We don't get too caught up if we don't score in the first 10 minutes, or even before the last 10 minutes. We just try to keep working hard and keep the pressure on the opponent."
Baraldi's goal was the seventh BGSU goal this season that has come in the final 15 minutes of the second half. Four of those seven goals, including Wednesday's goal, have come with the score tied and given the Falcons the lead for good.
"Tonight was one of Danny's best performances of the season, even before the goal," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "It was very apparent to anyone watching how much Danny wanted to win this game, and he controlled what he could control. It was fitting that he wound up getting the winning goal."
The Falcons had lopsided advantages of 25-6 in total shot attempts and 11-2 in shots on goal. Both of Heuton's saves came in the second half as the redshirt soph kept a clean sheet. Schweitzer made eight saves, and was aided by his back line as the 'Dons were credited with a pair of 'team saves.'
BGSU dominated the first half, both in terms of possession and in most statistical categories, but could not put a shot past Schweitzer. The chances started early.
With under three minutes gone, Roth played a free kick and hit a ball into the box. Sophomore Pat Flynn, the nation's leading scorer, just missed getting a foot on the ball, which continued through the six-yard area and out of play.
In the 11th minute, another Roth free kick sailed into the penalty area. Schweitzer punched it away, but junior Ryan James tracked it down and returned the ball to the area with another diagonal ball. The IPFW 'keeper punched that ball away, too, just before senior tri-captain Jon Kumher could get his head on it.
Then, redshirt sophomore Max Auden lofted a ball in the direction of Flynn, who nodded the ball toward goal. Schweitzer tipped it over the bar for a corner kick. Off of that corner, Roth put a ball into the box for Auden, but his header sailed high.
Less than two minutes later, Baraldi hit back-to-back shots from the top of the box. The first shot was blocked, and the second was cleared out of the area by an IPFW defender for the Mastodons' first 'team save' of the night.
Under 60 seconds after Baraldi's second shot of the sequence, Kumher got his head on a Roth corner kick at the near post, but his lunging effort went wide. Roth came up with a steal and quickly slid a pass to senior Vlad Lekarev, who fired a shot that sailed over the bar. That shot was BG's seventh in a span of less than six minutes.
BG then went nearly three whole minutes without a scoring chance, until Flynn was fouled as he ran onto an Auden through ball. Roth's free kick was tipped by Sullivan in the box, but the shot was wide.
Flynn took a Baraldi pass, turned and fired a shot wide in the 22nd minute, and Lekarev then hit a shot that Schweitzer could only deflect out of play. But, the match was still scoreless.
In the 26th minute of action, Flynn put Lekarev through, but his shot was saved at the near post. The senior had another shot on frame approximately 10 minutes later, after a Baraldi steal, but the IPFW 'keeper was able to tip Lekarev's shot over the bar.
The first-half chances kept coming though. With five minutes on the clock, Baraldi's volley from distance went just wide. Roth slid a free kick to junior Jake Genrich, who thumped a long ball into the box, but Schweitzer plucked it away from the awaiting Auden at the last second. With time ticking away in the opening period, Schweitzer grabbed a crossing ball from Falcon freshman Brad Macomber, and the teams went to intermission still locked in a scoreless draw.
After IPFW has attempted the first two shots of the game -- both of which were off target -- the Falcons had the final 14 shots of the opening half. BGSU had advantages of 5-0 in shots on goal and 4-1 in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
Less than a minute had passed in the second half before Flynn and the Falcons were at it again. The sophomore fired a shot on the doorstep, forcing Schweitzer into a point-blank save. Flynn corralled the rebound and shot again, but a defender blocked it and IPFW was able to end the threat.
Flynn saw another shot saved in the 52nd minute, after he had made a nifty move to create some space, and after James was fouled, Baraldi's bullet of a free kick was saved.
In the 59th minute, a long shot by Roth sailed wide of the far post. That shot gave BGSU a 21-2 advantage on the night, and was the 21st consecutive shot attempt by the Brown and Orange after IPFW had taken the game's first two shots.
One of the home team's best chances of the evening came in the 70th minute of play. After a corner kick by the 'Dons was headed out of the penalty area by the BG defense, the home team regained possession, and Jacob Murphy hit a curving shot from the 18-yard line. The shot, however, sailed over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Murphy's right-side cross found the head of Randy Maksimik. Maksimik's shot was not hit with great force, but the ball deflected off of a Falcon defender. Heuton, though, was in position to make the save.
With just over 12 minutes to go, Genrich played a long ball from near midfield. Flynn, facing away from goal, deftly flicked the ball toward the frame, but Schweitzer was in the right spot and grabbed the slick shot.
Five minutes later, however, the IPFW 'keeper left his line in an unsuccessful attempt to grab Roth's diagonal ball, and Sullivan's header led to Baraldi's winner.
The hosts attempted to find the equalizer, but Heuton grabbed a free kick by Murphy with four minutes to go, and rose up to snag a crossing ball with two minutes on the clock. The 'Dons would not threaten again, and the Falcons had the road win.
Flynn fired a game-high total of seven shots, putting four on frame. Baraldi had six shots, including three on goal, while Lekarev took four shots, with three on target.
BGSU is idle until Tuesday (Oct. 7), when the Falcons concluded a three-game road swing with a trip to Cleveland State. Then, the Brown and Orange will return home to begin Mid-American Conference play with a match vs. Akron on Saturday, Oct. 11.
