Leading Off
The Bowling Green State University baseball team will play host to the University at Buffalo in the final Mid-American Conference series of the 2013 campaign. The Falcons and Bulls will both be playing for a lot at Steller Field this weekend. UB has a chance to win their first MAC championship in school history, while the Falcons are playing to maintain their position and solidify a MAC tournament bid.
Scouting The Bulls
Under the direction of head coach Ron Torgalski, Buffalo has improved significantly, making their first MAC tournament in school history just a season ago. Now, at 30-21 overall and 17-6 in the MAC, they have the chance to win their first MAC championship in program history. Buffalo comes into the weekend with the MAC's best pitching staff, boasting an ERA of 3.68. The Bulls bat .272 as a squad, with Jason Kanzler leading the way. He leads UB with an average of .327, along with 13 doubles, 5 triples, and 10 home runs.
The Series
Thursday afternoon's game will be just the 37th all-time meeting in the series between the Bulls and Falcons. Bowling Green holds a 27-9 lead, but Buffalo won 2-of-3 in last year's series. Each season, the UB and BGSU series seems to hold a lot of weight. In 2012, Buffalo won the series, clinching the final spot in the MAC tournament over the Falcons. In 2011, the Falcons clinched a spot in the tournament with a win over Buffalo in the final weekend of MAC play. In 2010, the Falcons swept Buffalo - including a walk-off home run in the series' finale - to clinch the MAC championship.
Senior Day 2013
On May 18 (Saturday) four Falcon seniors will be honored on the field before the game. Nick Bruns, Matt Pitzulo, Drew Kuns, and Fred Sharp will all be recognized for their career accomplishments while wearing the Orange and Brown.
A Week In Review
The Falcons have gotten hot at the right time, having won three straight to cap off a 3-1 week. After losing an extra-innings game in Saturday's first game, the Falcons bounced back to win 7-2 in ten innings. On Sunday, the Falcons trounced Ohio 16-2 to take the series from the Bobcats. On Tuesday afternoon, the Falcons defeated the visiting Northern Kentucky Norse 13-8, setting a season-high in hits with 21.
