Toledo, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University football team got off to a slow start in the first half, falling behind 17-0, before getting on the scoreboard late in the second quarter with a 32-yard field goal by Tyler Tate. The early deficit would prove to be too much for the Falcons to overcome, falling at Toledo, 27-15 on Saturday night. With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 1-2, 0-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Toledo improves to 2-1, 1-0 in the MAC with the win.
Both teams got off to a slow start, as the Falcons and Rockets each exchanged punts on their first offensive possession of the game. After the Falcons were forced to punt on their second drive, Toledo got the scoring started, when Terrance Owens found Alonzo Russell down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown pass.
After the Falcons punted on their next two offensive possessions, Toledo would drive 80 yards to the BGSU 10-yard line, finishing off the drive with a 27-yard field goal.
The Falcons next drive ended when Matt Schilz's pass to Chris Gallon was intercepted at the BGSU 41. Toledo would capitalize quickly, scoring on a one-yard touchdown rush by David Fluellen.
The Falcons responded after the Toledo scoring drive, moving all the way down to the Toledo 18-yard line, before Tyler Tate's 36-yard field goal would miss wide left.
After a Toledo punt, Tate would redeem himself at the end of the half, banging home a 32-yarder to get the Falcons on the scoreboard going into halftime.
The second half did not start any better for the Falcons, as Toledo went 75 yards on 4 plays, in 1:18 for a 24-3 lead. The Toledo touchdown drive was capped off by a 22-yard run by David Fluellen.
Down 24-3, quarterback Matt Schilz would march the Falcons down the field on six plays, spanning 72 yards, capped off by a 28-yard Anthon Samuel touchdown run. The touchdown was Samuel's fourth of the season. The extra point would hit the right upright, and the Falcons would trail 24-9 with 10:41 to play in the third quarter.
After another Toledo punt, Bowling Green would turn the ball over on downs at the Toledo 13 yard line. The defense would waste no time getting the ball back, however, as David Fluellen would fumble, and D.J. Lynch would recover for the Falcons at the Toledo 24.
John Pettigrew's three-yard run would get the Falcons to within nine points, but a failed two-point conversion would keep the score at 24-15. The touchdown drive was set up by a key fourth down quarterback sneak by Schilz, with the Falcons facing a fourth down and two at the Toledo 16. Schilz's five-yard rush gave the Falcons a first down to begin the fourth quarter.
Toledo would add a 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the 12 point advantage. The field goal came at the end of a 14-play drive for the Rockets, taking 7:40 off the clock in the process.
On the ensuing possession, the Falcons would turn the ball over on downs at the 39-yard line. Toledo would then run the remaining 4:55 off the clock to end the game and claim the win.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend, in a matchup with the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies will bring a 2-1 record into the contest, and a top-25 ranking. The game is set for a 12:00 pm kickoff, with the telecast on ESPNU.
