Milwaukee, Wisc. – Sophomore forward A'uston Calhoun scored a career-high 26 points but Bowling Green failed to put away Milwaukee Saturday night and eventually lost 72-69. The Falcons led by as many as 11 points in the second half.
Bowling Green attempted 17 more shots than Milwaukee and made them at a higher rate (49 percent compared to 48 percent) but the Panthers overcame that by making 10 three-pointers and 20-of-28 free-throws, going to the line 13 more times than the Falcons. BGSU won almost every other statistical battle, including rebounding (33-30), turnovers (just eight for the Falcons compared to 12 for Milwaukee), points in the paint (44-16), and points off the bench (43-10).
Calhoun was dominant, making 13-of-21 shots and scoring 18 of his 26 in the second half. Scott Thomas also had a big performance in his first game back from injury, finishing with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, tying his career high with six assists.
Bowling Green ran an efficient offense after the first five minutes of the game. The Falcons started the contest by missing their first seven shots and falling behind 10-0. But BGSU went 15-for-22 the rest of the half and Cameron Black's putback at the buzzer put the Falcons on top 36-35 at the break.
Joe Jakubowski opened the second half with a three-pointer and Calhoun scored on a jumper that got the Bowling Green offense going. A Calhoun jumper with 13:42 to play gave the Falcons their first double-digit lead at 51-40 and another Calhoun bucket with 11:52 to play made it 55-44. But that's when Milwaukee began to chip away.
Tony Meier scored with 8:36 to play to bring the Panthers within seven and then added two free-throws a minute later to make it 57-52. Bowling Green led 61-54 until Tone Boyle knocked down one of his seven three-pointers on the evening with 6:32 to go and then Kaylon Williams scored inside to bring Milwaukee to within two.
Boyle hit another three-pointer with 4:52 to go to give Milwaukee the lead but the team's traded buckets until Boyle hit another long range bomb with 2:55 to go to put the Panthers up 67-65.
Milwaukee eventually led 70-67 after Williams made 1-of-2 free-throws with 32 seconds left but Calhoun scored on a lay-up with 14 seconds left to draw Bowling Green within one. Boyle made 1-of-2 free-throws with 13 seconds left but Thomas missed a tough fadeaway jumper with five seconds left. After Ryan Haggerty made 1-of-2 free-throws with two seconds left, Bowling Green was unable to get a three-pointer off to attempt to tie the game.
Along with Calhoun's 26 points and Thomas' 13, Black ended with 10 points and seven rebounds. Dee Brown added nine points and six assists.
Milwaukee improves to 6-7 on the season and Bowling Green falls to 2-9. The Falcons will return home to host Manhattan Wednesday at 7 p.m.
