Bowling Green, Ohio - Notre Dame's Aaron Gill scored off a faceoff at 10:14 of the third period for the game-winner over Bowling Green on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena, 3-2.
"It was clearly a disappointing game to lose," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "We did a lot of things necessary to win a game. We created some chances, we got some good saves throughout, our work ethic created some contact and loose pucks. But, basically the game comes down to a line of scrimmage play off of a faceoff. Notre Dame wins the draw, wins the line of scrimmage, shoots the puck in the back of the net and wins the hockey game."
Bowling Green battled back from a 2-1 deficit to knot the game at 2-2 when sophomore Steve Brudzewski scored on the Falcon power play at 15:15 of the second period. It was Brudzewski's 11th goal of the season and fourth PPG. Tyler Knight and Kevin Bieksa assisted on the goal.
BGSU's lone goal of the second period was one of 20 shots on net by the Falcons in the second stanza alone. It marked the second time this season that BGSU had 20 shot attempts in a period. The other time was also against ND and also against Irish goalie Morgan Cey on Dec. 8. ND won that game 5-2 and Cey had 47 saves.
Notre Dame had 15 shots in the second period and hit the back of the net on two of them. Tim Wallace scored at 9:26 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1, and John Wroblewski scored a PPG at 12:36 for the 2-1 Irish lead.
The Falcons scored first for the eighth time this season when junior Roger Leonard netted his sixth goal of the season at just 1:41 of the first period. Sophomore Ryan Minnabarriet and freshman Ryan Barnett assisted on the goal.
BGSU goalie Tyler Masters finished with a game-high 34 saves in 58:37 of action. It was his first appearance in four games. Cey finished with 33 saves for the Irish. Notre Dame outshot the Falcons 37-35 while BGSU was 1-for-4 on the power play and ND was 1-for-3.
Masters was pulled for the final 1:23 of the third period to give BGSU an extra attacker. The plan worked with several shot attempts but Cey held the Falcons in check.
Freshman Mike Falk had his four-game goal streak snapped while junior D'Arcy McConvey's four-game assist streak was also halted.
The two teams complete their season series tomorrow night, Saturday, at 7:05 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Arena.
