Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green fell to visiting Notre Dame on Saturday night for the second night in a row by a 3-2 count at the BGSU Ice Arena in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action. The Falcons lost to the Irish despite outshooting Notre Dame by a 32-24 count in the game.
"The games were just what we thought they would be," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "They were both very tightly-contested games and normally it comes down to a play you make or don't make. It was six periods of the same-type of hockey. It was almost like playoff hockey."
Notre Dame struck first with a power-play goal by Jake Wiegand at 5:21 of the first period, just five seconds into the Irish man-advantage, for an early 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way throughout the rest of the first period despite BGSU holding a 14-7 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes.
The final four goals of the game were scored in the second period. First, BGSU's Steve Brudzewski scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 1:24 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1. Roger Leonard and Brian Escobedo assisted on the goal.
Notre Dame's Connor Dunlop regained the lead for the Irish at 10:28 of the second period, 2-1. Forward Jon Wroblewski scored a short-handed goal at 18:38 of the second period to give the Irish a 3-1 lead and the momentum. However, BGSU's Tyler Knight netted his seventh goal of the season, and third PPG, with just 10 seconds remaining in the second period to bring BGSU back to within one, 3-2. Juniors Mark Wires and D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the goal. ND held a 13-11 shot advantage in the second period.
BGSU had chances in the third period and had an extra attacker after pulling goalie Jordan Sigalet for the final 1:26 of the game, but failed to score the game-tying goal. The Falcons held a seven to four shot advantage in the third period.
Both teams finished 1-for-7 on the power play with BGSU attempting eight shots with the man advantage while Notre Dame had just three shot attempts.
Irish goalie Morgan Cey had a game-high 30 saves while Jordan Sigalet had 21 saves for the Falcons.
BGSU drops to 7-19-2 overall and 4-16-2 in the CCHA. Notre Dame improves to 11-13-6 overall and 9-10-3 in the league.
The Falcons have a home-and-home series with Western Michigan next weekend (Feb. 21-22). BGSU travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., on Friday night (7:05 p.m.) while it entertains the Broncos on Saturday (7:05 p.m.).
