December 27, 1999 | Men's Basketball
Dec. 7, 1999
The Falcons stayed perfect on the season posting their sixth straight win to open the season with a hard-fought 69-57 victory on the road at Oakland University.
The 6-0 start by Bowling Green is the best since the 1947-48 team started the season with seven successive wins. The six game winning streak is also the longest since the 1991-92 squad won the same amount.
Oakland led for most of the first half. BG led early by as many as five points (7-2) before the Golden Grizzlies would go on a 14-2 run to take a 16-9 lead at the 10:04 mark. It was their largest lead of the game.
Oakland would hold onto the lead until the 3:09 mark when a Keith McLeod layup put the Falcons ahead for good. In fact, BG would score 12 of the last 14 points of the first half to turn a four-point deficit into a six-point halftime edge.
BG led by as many as eight points early in the second half before Oakland made a run.
A 13-4 run would close the gap to one point at 37-36 with 13:19 left. The BG advantage was still only one point with 10:28 left when McLeod hit a three-point shot, Anthony Stacey converted a three-point play, and Trent Jackson converted a three-point play on consecutive trips down the court to raise the advantage to 10 points (53-43) with 8:10 remaining.
Eight points was as close as Oakland would get the rest of the way with BG leading by double digits for most of the last eight minutes.
Jackson had 15 second-half points on his way to a career-high 23 points to lead the Falcons while Stacey chipped in with 16 points and 13 rebounds and McLeod added 17 markers. BG held Oakland to just 33.0% shooting from the floor, and only 25.0% from three-point range.
