STEEL CITY
• As mentioned, the Falcons face a pair of teams from the Pittsburgh area this week. The BGSU roster includes four players who hail from Western Pennsylvania, with three from Pittsburgh and one from Latrobe. That quartet is comprised of Payton O'Malley (Chartiers Valley), Regan Reilly (Latrobe), Kaley Simqu (Plum) and Minah Syam (Avonworth)
THE STARTING XI
I – The Falcons are 3-1-1, which marks BGSU's best start since the spring of 2021 (4-1-0). In seasons with a typical fall schedule, BG has not gotten off to such a strong start since the 2002 squad also opened at 3-1-1.
II – Head coach Chris Fox and Company are 3-0-0 against Horizon League opponents, heading into Thursday's Robert Morris match. BG boasts wins over Oakland (1-0), Cleveland State (2-1) and Detroit Mercy (4-1) to date. BGSU's lone loss this fall was a 1-0 decision vs. Illinois, and most recently, the Falcons battled Cincinnati to a scoreless draw on Sunday (Aug. 31).
III – Sophomore Payton O'Malley made seven saves against UC, tying her career high. On the season, O'Malley has a goals-against average of 0.60 and a save percentage of .875, leading the MAC in both categories. She has total 21 saves (tied for third in the MAC) to date.
IV – At the other end of the pitch, sixth-year collegian Ellie Pool and junior Emma Stransky each have two goals and four points, while a trio of transfers – juniors Ella Kane, Gabby Lamparty and Isabella Mazzaferro – each have three points.
V – Another junior, Michelle Hochstadt, who led the Falcons with five assists a year ago, paces the team in that category again, with two on the young season.
VI – A total of 25 different players have seen action this season to date, with 14 Falcons having made at least one start. Lamparty, O'Malley, Pool, Emme Butera, Taylor Green, Minah Syam and Alexis Tsaprailis each have started all five games.
VII – Pool had a pair of goals in the Falcons' win at UDM last week. She has played against the Titans four times in her career, and has five goals and 11 points in those four games. Pool has scored the game-winning goal in each of her last two appearances vs. UDM, and she also had a game-winning assist vs. the Titans while with Toledo in 2021.
VIII – BGSU finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 7-7-4 and a MAC ledger of 4-4-3. The Falcons finished in sixth place in the 12-team conference. BG went 4-1-3 at home and 3-6-1 on the road in 2024.
IX – Fox and his staff – first-year assistant coaches Steven Samuel and Kyle Pettican – have a total of 20 returning student-athletes. That group includes seven starters from a year ago. Six of the top-nine scorers from '24 returned.
X – Robert Morris is 2-2-0 on the year, with wins over Southern Indiana and Canisius and losses vs. Navy and Eastern Michigan. Madison Hurst has two of the team's three goals to date, while Emma Cameron has played every minute in goal for coach Michelle Rick's club, with 18 saves, two clean sheets and a 1.25 GAA. The Falcons lead RMU, 3-0-0, in the all-time series, with the teams meeting in each of BGSU's first two varsity seasons – 1997 and '98 – and again in 2017.
XI – Duquesne is 3-1-0 heading into a Thursday match vs. Cleveland State. The Dukes have wins over Kent State, Saint Francis and Mercyhurst and a loss to West Virginia. Maya Matesa is one of the nation's leading scorers, with seven goals for first-year DU head coach Jessica Giegucz. Ali Hughes has 13 saves, two shutouts and a 1.25 GAA. BGSU and DU have split their two prior matchups, with the home team winning each (BGSU in 2004, DU in 2024).
