THE STARTING XI
I – The Falcons, at 7-1-5 (.731) overall, are off to the best start in school history. Prior to this fall, the best 13-game percentage was .692 by the 2018 team, which began the year with an 8-3-2 record. The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.
II – Head coach Chris Fox and Company will put an 11-match unbeaten streak – tied for the longest such streak in program history – on the line in Sunday's Miami match. BGSU is 6-0-5 since a 1-0 loss to Illinois on Aug. 17.
III – The Falcons are 2-0-4 in Mid-American Conference play, including wins over Kent State (2-1, Sept. 14) and Central Michigan (4-0, Sept. 28) and 1-1 draws against Ohio (Sept. 18) and defending MAC champion Western Michigan (Sept. 21). BGSU is the only MAC team without a loss in league action.
IV – More recently, the Falcons played to draws in a pair of road games last week, with a scoreless tie at Toledo (Oct. 2) and a 1-1 stalemate at Eastern Michigan (Oct. 5). Junior Lizzie Bultynck scored BGSU's goal at EMU, and has three goals in the Falcons' last three matches. Bultynck has been involved in the scoring of each of BGSU's last four goals, with the three goals and an assist in that span.
V – BGSU lost four matches in MAC play last year, falling to Ohio, WMU, KSU and CMU. Those were the Falcons' first four opponents in league action this season. BG picked up eight points in the four matches vs. that group, after getting zero points against that quartet in 2024.
VI – Junior Emma Stransky leads the Falcons in scoring, with six goals and 12 points on the year. She scored the game-winning goal in three of BGSU's September wins, vs. Duquesne, KSU and CMU. Bultynck, fellow junior Gabby Lamparty and sixth-year collegian Ellie Pool each have seven points, while two more juniors, Ella Kane and Isabella Mazzaferro, have five points apiece. Junior Emme Butera has a team-high four assists.
VII – Sophomore Payton O'Malley has started all 13 matches in goal, and has 47 saves, a goals-against average of 0.62 and a save percentage of .855. She currently leads the MAC in both GAA and save pct.
VIII – A total of 26 different players have seen action this season to date, with 21 Falcons having made at least one start. Four players – Butera, Lamparty, O'Malley and Pool – each have started all 13 games.
IX – The Falcons have matched the win total for all of last season. BGSU finished the 2024 campaign with an overall record of 7-7-4 and a MAC ledger of 4-4-3, good for sixth in the league. Fox and his staff – first-year assistants Steven Samuel and Kyle Pettican – have a total of 20 returning student-athletes, including seven starters from a year ago. Six of the top-nine scorers from '24 returned.
X – Miami is 7-5-0 overall, and the RedHawks are 4-2-0 in MAC play, good for third in the league standings. MU has won three-straight matches, all by 1-0 scores, over Eastern Michigan, Akron and Toledo. Katie O'Malley leads a balanced scoring attack with 10 points on three goals and four assists, and a total of 10 RedHawks have scored at least one goal this season. Between the posts, Dominique Popa has started all 12 games, and has 29 saves, six shutouts and a 1.08 GAA. Last season, coach Courtney Sirmans's RedHawks went 8-5-6 overall and 4-3-4 in MAC play.
XI – The Falcons lead Miami, 14-13-4, in the all-time series, and BGSU is unbeaten in the last nine meetings (7-0-2). Last season, the Falcons and RedHawks played to a 1-1 draw in a match that was moved from Oxford to Hamilton Ross H.S. due to field conditions (Sept. 29, 2024). In the last meeting at Cochrane Stadium, three years ago (Oct. 20, 2022), the Orange and Brown picked up a 1-0 win. Miami won the first eight series meetings, before BGSU captured the next seven. Then, MU went 5-0-2 against the Orange and Brown before BG's current nine-match unbeaten streak. Each team has scored 48 goals in the 31 series meetings. BGSU is 9-5-1 in home games, 5-7-3 in road games and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the RedHawks through the years.
XII (off the bench) – The 2025 and 2026 MAC Women's Soccer Championships each will take place at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. This will mark the first time in conference history that the event will be held at a neutral site.
