Six Falcon Home Runs Paces BGSU To Doubleheader Sweep Over Akron
April 02, 2022 | Baseball
Offensively, the Falcons were dominant at the plate, knocking six home runs as a team. In addition to Gurney's three, Adam Furnas, Jack Krause and Nathan Rose each hit one. The offensive surge allowed the Orange and Brown to outscore the Zips 24-7 on the day. Andrew Abrahamowicz and Connar Penrod picked up wins while both Joel Roediger and Peyton Wilson logged saves.
The Falcons and Zips will return to Steller Field on Sunday (April 3) for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch to conclude the series. Bowling Green will enter with the ability to win the series with a win. Owen Recker will take the mound for the start.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
- The Zips tallied the first run in the top of the first. A fielder's choice followed by back-to-back singles allowed the first run to cross, giving Akron the early 1-0 lead.
- The Falcons responded loudly in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight runs. The rally saw BGSU bat around with eight of the nine batters in the lineup logging a hit. The only batter that didn't log a hit was on a sacrifice bunt.
- The eight-run inning was jump started by a two-run home run by Adam Furnas, the first BGSU home run at Steller Field this season. Adam Furnas and Ryan Johnston chipped in doubles, including three RBI on the base knock for Johnston.
- A two-out burst in the second inning extended the Bowling Green lead. Tyler Haas reached on a bloop to right field before Nathan Archer ripped a triple to the left-center wall to score Haas, making it 9-1 BGSU.
- The Falcons continued to add to their lead in the third inning with a pair of solo home runs. Jack Krause sent one to right before Kyle Gurney hit his to left. Later in the inning, a Justin Fugitt double scored Nathan Rose to push the BGSU advantage to 12-1 after three innings.
- Akron answered in the top of the fourth. A walk and wild pitch put a runner on second for the Zips, scoring on a single through the right side to chip away at the deficit at 12-2.
- A pinch hitter to begin the fifth inning hit a home run for Akron, making it 12-3.
- In the bottom half of the fifth, Nathan Rose crushed his first home run of the season, a two-run jack to left field to extend the lead to 14-3 Falcons.
- Another run crossed for the Falcons in the sixth on a fielder's choice to push the score to 15-3.
- A bases-loaded fielder's choice in the seventh allowed an Akron run for the 15-4 final.
