Falcons Drop Series Opener To Beavers

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons (11-9-3, 8-6-1-1) fell to the Bemidji State Beavers (13-10-0, 11-4-0) by a score of 5-3 on Friday, Jan. 14, in Slater Family Ice Arena. BSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period, including a shorthanded score with ten seconds left. The Falcons cut the deficit to one after two second period goals, including their own shorthanded score. The Beavers capitalized on a 5-on-3 opportunity in the third, then on the ensuing 5-on-4. A power play goal from the Falcons ended the scoring for the evening.

Scoring Plays
- The Beavers were on the board first, with Alex Ierullo scoring on a breakaway opportunity in the first period. Assists were credited to Owen Sillinger and Lukas Sillinger.
- Three and a half minutes later, Bemidji State added to the lead with an Ethan Somoza goal. The captain scored on a shot from the right circle, with assists going to Elias Rosen and Owen Sillinger.
- With ten seconds left in the opening frame, BSU scored a shorthanded goal. Tyler Kirkup knocked in a rebound on another breakaway opportunity, with the lone assist going to Alex Ierullo.
- Bowling Green struck first in the second period, with Eric Parker slotting a shot from the right circle. T.J. Lloyd and Austen Swankler earned the assists.
- Like the Beavers in the first, the Falcons ended the second with a late shorthanded goal. With under 15 seconds left in the middle frame, Sam Craggs moved the puck up the ice to Taylor Schneider, then received a pass from Schneider on the left crease. Craggs lit the lamp with 13 seconds left in the second period, cutting the deficit to one.
- Bemidji State opened the third period with a power play goal from Rosen with assists from Ross Armour and Ierullo.
- The Beavers added another score on the power play. Jere Vaisanen scored with the lone assist being from Kirkup.
- The Falcons registered a power play goal of their own before the end of the night. Swankler snipped a score from a knee, seeing assists from Taylor Schneider and Eric Parker.
Falcon Facts
- Sam Craggs scored his fifth goal of the season and 26th of his career. It was a shorthanded goal, his first this season and third of his career. The senior has 59 points in his career. BGSU has two shorthanded goals this season, with the other being Alex Barber's being against Miami on Oct. 23.
- Craggs played in the 167th game of his BGSU career, tying Joe Quinn for sixth place on the program's all-time list.
- Austen Swankler scored his eighth goal and tallied his 16th assist, tying him with Taylor Schneider for the team lead in points with 24. It was Swankler's sixth multi-point effort of the season. His goal came on the power play, his third power play score of the season.
- Freshman Eric Parker scored the first goal of his collegiate career. He also tallied his eighth assist of the year, giving him nine points this season.
- Taylor Schneider notched two assists, pushing his season total to a team-high 17. He is tied with Swankler for the team lead in points (24). His second assist was the 45th of his career, giving the senior 77 career points. Schneider has nine multi-point efforts this year, the most on the team. He has 16 multi-point efforts in his career, second on the team. He is now second on the team with three multi-assist performances this year and six in his career.
- T.J. Lloyd also tallied an assist, his ninth of the year and 31st of his career. The junior has ten points this season and 35 in his career.
