MILESTONE WATCH
• Several members of the Falcons, including head coach Robyn Fralick and senior Kadie Hempfling, are approaching various milestones.
• The next time the ball is tipped, it will mark the 100th game as a Falcon for both Fralick and Hempfling. Fralick has a 45-54 overall record with the Orange and Brown. After going a combined 19-42 in her first two years, Fralick and the Falcons have a record of 26-12 since the start of the 2020-21 season.
• Assuming Hempfling is in the starting lineup for BGSU's next game, it will be her 99th career start. She enters the month of January having played in 99 career contests as a Falcon, and after coming off the bench to make her collegiate debut (at Michigan State; Nov. 6, 2018), Hempfling has started each of BG's last 98 contests.
• Fralick's next win will be the 150th victory of her collegiate head-coaching career. After just six years (plus nine games), she has a 149-57 record. Her teams have won an average of 24 games per season over her first six years as a head coach (three with Ashland, three at BGSU).
• Hempfling, in the 99th game of her career, surpassed the 900-point mark as a Falcon. She had a game-high 20 points vs. UT Martin, and now has 912 points. Hempfling is the 37th player in program history to top the 900-point plateau. She moved up five spots on the BGSU career scoring list during the trip to Vegas, and now ranks 35th in school history on that chart.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
• BGSU will be looking to win the MAC opener for the second-straight season. Last year, the Falcons posted a 71-64 win over Eastern Michigan in the first conference contest of the season (Dec. 11, 2020). It snapped a four-game losing streak in league openers.
• BGSU leads the all-time series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league with a winning record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories and highest overall winning pct. of any league institution.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFO ABOUT THE FALCONS
• You might be aware that BGSU, picked to finish 11th in the MAC last season, won 21 total games and the league's regular-season title in 2020-21. (If you weren't aware, now you are.)
• A total of 10 letterwinners from that club, including all five starters, are on the roster in 2021-22. BG's top-five scorers are back from a year ago, including All-MAC performers Lexi Fleming and Kadie Hempfling. Fleming, a sophomore, was named the MAC Freshman of the Year after averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game, and she also was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team. Fleming's total of 67 steals was the highest by a freshman in BGSU history.
• Fleming suffered an injury during the preseason, however, and will miss the 2021-22 campaign.
• Hempfling, a senior, earned all-league third-team honors a year ago after averaging 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. She ranked among the top-three players on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists (3.0 apg), and led the Falcons in plus/minus ratio.
• Junior Elissa Brett rounds out BG's returning double-digit scorers. Brett averaged 12.0 ppg and led the Falcons in rebounding (6.7 rpg). She led the Orange and Brown in scoring at tournament time, averaging 13.8 ppg in BG's six tournament games (three MAC Tournament and three WNIT contests).
• Sophomore Nyla Hampton and fifth-year Falcon Madisen Parker scored 9.3 and 7.4 ppg, respectively, last season. Hampton joined Fleming on the MAC's All-Freshman Team, and also was chosen to the MAC All-Defensive Team. She was second on the Falcons in both assists (2.8) and steals (2.3) per game, and shot 63 percent from the field in BG's three WNIT games.
• Parker, after leading the entire nation in three-point field-goal percentage two years ago, finished 11th in the country last season. She shot 45.0% from the arc, making a team-high 58 long-range attempts.
• Sophomore Kenzie Lewis was one of just two Falcons to start all 29 games last year, joining Hempfling in that category. Lewis averaged 4.9 ppg despite attempting fewer than three shots per contest, and led the team in assists (3.1 apg) while ranking second in both rebounds (6.1) and steals (2.0).
• Redshirt junior Molly Dever and sophomores Jasmine Clerkley, Sophie Dziekan and Olivia Hill round out the Falcons' returnees.
• Fralick and the Falcons welcomed four newcomers (all Ohio natives) to this year's roster, including redshirt sophomore Morgan Sharps (Granville, Ohio), a transfer from Xavier. BG's trio of freshmen include Zoe Miller (Berlin, Ohio), Jocelyn Tate (Pickerington, Ohio) and Amy Velasco (Centerville, Ohio).
• Through nine games this season, Sharps and Hempfling have averaged 12.2 and 10.3 ppg, respectively, pacing a balanced scoring attack which features seven players averaging at least 6.8 points per outing. Miller has 10.2 ppg, with Brett at 9.3, Hampton 8.2, Velasco 7.9 and Tate at 6.8 ppg.
• Tate leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game, while Lewis paces the Falcons in assists (4.4 apg). Hampton is second on the team in that category (3.4 apg) and leads the Falcons in both steals (3.4 spg) and blocked shots (0.7 bpg). Tate is tied with Hampton for the team lead in the latter category.
• A total of eight different players have started at least one game this season. Hampton, Hempfling and Lewis each have started all nine contests, while Velasco has made six starts and Brett and Miller five apiece.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINALS
• Ball State is 7-3 on the season, and the Cardinals are riding a three-game winning streak. Most recently, BSU downed Bellarmine by an 84-63 outcome on Dec. 20. The Cards are 4-1 at home, 2-0 on the road and 1-2 in neutral-site games.
• Anna Clephane leads the team with 17.2 points per game, and she is shooting 54.2% from the field. Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and Sydney Freeman have 11.4 and 10.2 ppg, respectively. Head coach Brady Sallee welcomed back eight letterwinners, including four starters, from a 2020-21 club that went 14-11 overall and 12-8 in the MAC.
• Since the start of the 2020-21 season, the Cards are 7-9 at home and 13-2 on the road. BSU has won 10 consecutive true road games, including eight in a row vs. MAC foes, since the team's last road loss (Jan. 9, 2021, at Kent State).
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Ball State, 45-24, in the all-time series, and BGSU captured last year's lone meeting. The Falcons picked up an 89-55 win in Muncie (Jan. 2, 2021), snapping BSU's 10-game series winning streak. The last meeting in the Stroh Center saw the Cards pick up an 86-80 overtime victory. BGSU is 24-7 in home games, 19-14 in road contests and 2-3 in neutral-site events vs. the Cardinals over the years.
• Much more information on the BGSU-Ball State series can be found on page 19 of the PDF version of these notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Ball State matchup, the Falcons remain at home for a Wednesday (Jan. 5) battle with Buffalo. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will begin the road portion of the conference slate with two-straight games in Northeast Ohio. BG faces Akron on Jan. 8 and Kent State on Jan. 12 before returning home to meet Miami on Saturday, Jan. 15.
