BGSU battles Broncos in Saturday evening contest at Cochrane

WHAT TO WATCH FOR...
• The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team will wrap up the regular-season schedule with a pair of key Mid-American Conference matchups, beginning this weekend. Head coach Eric Nichols and the defending MAC champions close out the home portion of the schedule with a Saturday (Oct. 30) match vs. Western Michigan. First touch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and as always, admission is free.
HOW TO FOLLOW THE FALCONS
• Saturday's WMU matchup will be streamed on YouTube, free of charge, and produced by WBGU-TV. Live stats will be available as well, and twitter updates can be found at @BGSUmenssoccer.
• Links to live audio/video/stats for all 2021 matches can be found on the web at BGSUFalcons.com (on the men's soccer schedule page as well as at the top of the main page) on game day.
TRUNK OR TREAT (WHY NOT BOTH?)
• As if free admission wasn't enough, fans have another great reason to come to Cochrane Stadium on Saturday night. BGSU Athletics, in conjunction with the BGSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), will be holding a Trunk or Treat event at 6:00 p.m. in the Cochrane Stadium parking lot.
• Fans are invited to bring their children for some candy and fun. Children who stick around for the men's soccer game are invited to participate in a costume parade on the field at halftime.
FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 10-3-2 on the season, and BGSU is 2-1-1 start in MAC play. BG went 6-2-1 in a month-long stretch from mid-September to mid-October, before suffering a 5-1 loss at Akron last weekend. The Falcons responded with a dominant 3-0 win at Oakland on Tuesday evening (Oct. 26).
• BGSU began the month of October (some call it 'MACtober') with a pair of home wins over the league's two newest members. The Falcons defeated Georgia State (3-2) and Georgia Southern (4-0) at Cochrane Stadium before going on the road and earning a 1-1 draw vs. Northern Illinois in a matchup of top-25 teams.
• After battling IUPUI to a scoreless draw in the season opener at Cochrane, BG went to Gonzaga, Cleveland State and Michigan State and won all three matches by an 8-1 aggregate. Marshall – #6 in the nation at the time and now up to #2 in the rankings – got a goal with just 93 seconds left in the second half as the defending national champions downed the Falcons, 1-0, on Sept. 11. But, the Orange and Brown bounced back with four-straight wins, including shutout victories over Wright State, then #13/17 FIU and Detroit Mercy.
• BG downed Canisius before falling at Ohio State in overtime, but the Falcons then picked up seven points in three league matches to begin 'MACtober.'
•BGSU led by two goals on only one occasion during all of last season, and never had a three-goal lead in the spring. But, the Falcons have led by two or more goals in eight of the last 13 games, winning seven such skirmishes by multiple goals.
• BGSU scored as many as two goals in a match only three times in 13 games in the spring. But, the Falcons have recorded two or more goals 10 times in 15 matches this season to date.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals six times this year after doing so only once in those 13 spring matches.
• BGSU is now 75-8-6 when scoring two or more goals in a match in the Eric Nichols Era.
• BG is 5-1-1 at home and 5-2-1 on the road, and the Falcons have topped the home, road and overall win totals for all of last season. BGSU has outscored opponents by a 30-13 count this season.
• Alberto Anaya and Jacob Erlandson lead a balanced Falcon scoring attack which features six players with at least 10 points. Anaya and Erlandson each have 14 points on five goals and four assists. Anaya picked up his third game-winning goal of the season in the win at Oakland, while Erlandson has a pair of GWG.
• Kyle Cusimano has 12 points on the year, while Sergi Martinez and Roberto Fernandez Garrido have 11 apiece and Nathan Masters 10.
• Cusimano leads the Falcons with eight assists this fall, while Martinez, who has three goals and five assists on the season, was chosen as the United Soccer Coaches Division I Player of the Week on Sept. 22.
• Fernandez Garrido has come off the bench to score five goals this year, tying him with Anaya and Jacob Erlandson for the team lead. Masters, who assisted on BG's first goal at Oakland, was taken down in the box to draw the PK that resulted in the Falcons' second goal of the night.
• Martinez assisted on the final goal of the win at OU, which was scored by Abdi Faqi. Faqi became the 10th different Falcon to score a goal this fall.
• Logan Kowalczyk played every second between the posts in the first 14 matches of the year. He has seven shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.89. Kowalczyk has kept 12 clean sheets in 26 career starts at BGSU. Brendan Graves made his season debut at Oakland, and kept the first clean sheet of his BG career.
• Entering the WMU contest, the Falcons have an overall record of 35-17-6 over the last 58 games, dating to late in the 2018 season. Twelve of the 17 setbacks in that time have come by a single goal.
LOOKING TO MAINTAIN THAT HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE
• The Falcons certainly have given fans their money's worth at Cochrane Stadium (especially since admission is free!). BGSU finished the 2020(-21) season with a record of 3-0-1 at home, and the Falcons allowed only one goal at Cochrane Stadium in those four matches.
• BGSU is 13-1-2 in the last 16 matches at Cochrane, with the loss to defending national champion Marshall the only setback in that time.
• BGSU is 14-3-2 at home in the last two-plus seasons, having outscored the opponents by a 37-12 count during that span.
• Taking it back a few more years, BG is 26-7-10 at Cochrane Stadium since the start of the 2016 season, and the Falcons have a home record of 38-11-11 since the beginning of the 2014 campaign. The Falcons have outscored the opposition, 118-44, at Cochrane, dating to the final home game of the 2013 season.

THE OPPONENT
• Western Michigan enters Saturday's contest with an overall record of 6-6-4, and the Broncos are 1-3-0 in MAC play. WMU brings a two-match winning streak to Cochrane Stadium, having downed Georgia Southern, 3-0, on the road last weekend before topping Detroit Mercy, 1-0, at home on Wednesday afternoon. Charlie Sharp and Dylan Sing are tied for the team scoring lead, with four goals and 10 points apiece. In goal, Isaac Walker has started the last 14 matches and has 45 saves, seven shutouts and a GAA of just 0.73. Western is 5-2-2 at home and 1-4-2 on the road this season to date.
THE SERIES
• BGSU leads WMU, 28-20-5, in the all-time series, but the Broncos have enjoyed success vs. the Falcons as of late. WMU . The Broncos have won three-straight meetings, and Western is 5-0-2 since the Falcons' last series win, a 2-1 overtime triumph at Cochrane Stadium seven years ago (Nov. 1, 2014). The most recent meeting saw Western pick up a 2-1 victory in Kalamazoo in the spring (April 7, 2021). BG is 2-0-2 in the last four home matchups vs. WMU. The Falcons won the first 11 series meetings, and BGSU began the series with a 24-3-2 mark. But, WMU is 17-4-3 vs. the Orange and Brown since 2002. All told, the Falcons are 16-4-4 at home, 11-14-1 on the road and 1-2-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the Broncos through the years.
UP NEXT
• Following the WMU match, the Falcons will end the regular-season slate with a match at West Virginia next Thursday (Nov. 4). That contest is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
• When play concludes that evening, the Falcons hope to be one of the top-four teams in the conference standings. Those four teams will head to the site of the regular-season champion for MAC Tournament semifinal-round action on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
• The MAC Tournament final is set for Saturday, Nov. 13.
