Noting The Nanooks
Having just faced the Falcons in Fairbanks three weeks ago, the Nanooks swept Alaska Anchorage for the Governor's Cup last weekend, winning 5-2 and 6-1. On Friday, Anchorage took a 2-1 lead into the third period, in which the Nanooks rattled off a four-goal third period due in large part to a hat trick by Steven Jandric. Jandric followed up with a duo of points on Saturday night as well. With the five points on the weekend, Jandric now paces Alaska in goals, assists and total points. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Nanooks stood at 16-13-5 overall while being 14-9-5-2 in the WCHA.Â
The Series At A Glance
The meeting with Alaska will be the second of the season while also being the second in less than a month between the teams, having just played in Fairbanks on Feb. 14 and 15. In the last series, the Falcons and Nanooks went to an unconventional split, seeing both games to a tie and each team claiming three points total on the weekend due to a tie-win and a tie-loss. The split continued an unwritten tradition in the series with the last sweep being during the 2014-15 season when the Falcons traveled to Fairbanks and came away with two 3-2 victories. With all the splits and recent ties, Bowling Green still holds the series advantage with a 32-29-12 standing against Alaska.
Last Time Out
The Falcons ended the regular season on a high note, sweeping the final two series of the season and accumulating an eight-game unbeaten streak, the second longest active streak in the nation behind only No. 1 Cornell with the last official loss being on Feb. 1 to then No. 19 Bemidji State. To close out the regular season, the Falcons captured a sweep over Alabama Huntsville. On Friday, the Falcons and Chargers went to overtime with the win being clinched by a power play goal by Alex Barber. The Orange and Brown followed up with three power play scores on Saturday en route to a 4-1 victory to claim the sweep and continue the unbeaten streak.Â
Around The WCHAÂ
With the regular season concluded, the WCHA will see playoff atmospheres across the conference this weekend. Minnesota State clinched the regular season and the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will host No. 8 Alaska Anchorage. Despite taking a win against the Mavericks, Bemidji State will still slot it at the No. 2 spot and will host No. 7 Lake Superior State. In a rematch from the final week of the season, No. 3 Northern Michigan will host No. 6 Michigan Tech while No. 4 Alaska and No. 5 Bowling Green round out the field. Ferris State and Alabama Huntsville's seasons concluded with the regular season.
Rauhauser Rising In The Record BookÂ
With three assists over the weekend, Alec Rauhauser continued to climb the all-time scoring lists, now with 121 career points, consisting of 28 goals and 93 assists. The 121 career points places Rauhauser 52nd on the all-time scoring list while also moving him past fellow defensemen Brian McKee. In passing McKee, Rauhauser is now ninth among defensemen in program history for career points. Rauhauser is also nearing another milestone, being 100 career assists. Just seven away, he would be the 21st player in program history to hit the mark and the first since 1997 when both Curtis Fry and Kelly Perrault did so with Perrault also being the most recent defensemen. Â
At The Wright Time
Entering the weekend with 19 goals, Cameron Wright wasted little time before etching his name in Falcon Hockey history. Less than a minute into the second period of Friday's game, Wright scored an unassisted goal that went down as his 20th of the season. In doing so, Wright became the first Falcon to reach the mark since the 2007-08 season when Derek Whitmore tallied 27 in the Orange and Brown. Before this season, Wright had scored nine goals in each of his first two seasons in Bowling Green.
Going For 20 In 2020
The Falcons will head into the WCHA playoffs with 19 wins under their belt as they seek to hit the 20-win mark. Bowling Green has tallied 20 wins each of the last five seasons with the 23-win 2014-15 campaign beginning the run. If the Falcons can capture win number 20 and extend the streak to six years it would tie the second longest streak of consecutive 20-win seasons in program history. The Falcons had six straight years of 20-win seasons from 1973-74 until 1978-79, spanning the duration of Ron Mason's career at the helm of the Orange and Brown. The longest streak ran from the 1981-82 season until 1989-90, beginning in Jerry York's third season with the team.Â
The Return Of Mr. March
A year ago, Max Johnson scored a total of 14 points in the month of March, including back-to-back four-point games in the WCHA playoffs. This year, he is heating up and heading into the playoffs for another historic stretch. Each of the last two series, Johnson has totaled three points, registering six assists over the four games. The hot streak has ran his career point total up to 95 as he looks to join Brandon Kruse and Alec Rauhauser has players to join the 100 career point club this season.Â
Catching Fire
Having swept three of the last four series, the Falcons are 6-0-2 over their last eight for the second longest unbeaten streak in the nation behind only Cornell.Â
