No. 13 vs. No. 11: Bowling Green To Battle Bobcats
December 16, 2020 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No.13 Bowling Green State University hockey team will face their first ranked opponent of the season in No. 11 Quinnipiac this weekend. Traveling to Hamden, Conn., the Falcons will make the trip with a 6-1 record with three non-conference games left to play this season.Â
Â
Falcons Closing In On Conference Play
Just three non-conference games remain on the schedule for the Falcons, being this series against Quinnipiac and a home game against Robert Morris. So far, Bowling Green has amassed a 6-1 record in the 2020-21 campaign as they prep for their first ever meeting with Quinnipiac. For the Orange and Brown, the series will also serve as their first against a ranked opponent with Quinnipiac being ranked No. 11 in the country. The Falcons did face Robert Morris when they were receiving votes.Â
Comparing To Quinnipiac
Quinnipiac's season began just earlier this week with a two-game set against Sacred Heart on Monday and Tuesday and the Bobcats came out firing. In the first game alone, Quinnipiac came away with a 9-2 victory with all nine goals being scored by different players. After finishing last season with a 21-11-2 standing, the Bobcats entered the 2020-21 season with high expectations, and they lived up to those in the first game. Originally, Quinnipiac's season was set to start on Nov. 27 against Long Island with their second game being on Nov. 29 against Clarkson, but both were canceled, leading to this week being the first action of the campaign for the Bobcats.Â
The Games At A Glance
After facing Ferris State last weekend, one of the most played opponents in program history, the Falcons will now flip to the other side of the spectrum for a brand-new opponent. This series will mark the first between Bowling Green and Quinnipiac and it comes at a high point for both programs. Bowling Green will enter the series ranked No. 13 by the USCHO and No. 12 by USA Today. As for Quinnipiac, they are ranked No. 11 in both polls. The Bobcats will be the first ranked opponent of the season for the Falcons after they previously faced Robert Morris who was receiving votes at the time. What could play a large role in the series is season experience. The Orange and Brown have seven games under their belt while Quinnipiac will enter with just two, being earlier this week against Sacred Heart.Â
Last Time OutÂ
This past weekend, the Falcons took on Ferris State in a non-conference home-and-home series and were able to accomplish the weekend sweep. On Friday (Dec. 11), the Falcons captured a 3-2 victory at home thanks to a redirect goal by Max Johnson with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. As for Saturday (Dec. 12), Bowling Green surged to a 6-2 victory to complete the sweep behind two Cameron Wright goals and three Brandon Kruse assists. The two wins for the Orange and Brown moved them to 6-1 on the season, the best start for the Falcons since they began with the same record at the start of the 1994-95 season. Bowling Green finished that year with a 25-11-2 record and a second-place finish in the CCHA.Â
Road WarriorsÂ
The Falcons will be put to the test this weekend in their first road weekend series. Thus far, Bowling Green has put together a 4-0 record when on the road, but all four road games have been part of home-and-home series'. The two games against Quinnipiac will be the first full road series.
Early Indicators Â
While the season is still young for Bowling Green, there are emerging stats that have been consistent in the team's outcomes. When leading after the second period this year, the Falcons are 6-0 while their lone loss came after they were trailing at the end of the second. Similarly, the Falcons are 6-0 when scoring three or more goals, but their lone loss came when they were able to net three goals with just one. The Orange and Brown have also accumulated a 5-0 record when scoring first, accounting for all but one of the Falcons' wins.Â
Dominating Shots On GoalÂ
Through the first seven games of the season, Bowling Green has outshot their opponent in each contest, registering at least 30 shots in each game while holding their opponent to less than 30 shots in each game as well. On the season, the Falcons are 4-0 when logging 40 shots or more in a single game and even had an outburst of 51 shots on goal in the 3-1 win over Mercyhurst.Â
Two-Headed Monster In Goal Â
Eric Dop and Zack Rose are quickly becoming one of the best goalie duos in the country. So far this season, both Rose and Dop are in the Top 15 in the country for Goals Against Average, making Bowling Green the only team to have two goalies in the Top 15 for the category. Additionally, Eric Dop's 4-0-0 record is tied atop the NCAA for winning percentage and Zack Rose's shutout is one of just 18 to be recorded so far this season, coming from 15 different goalies. After alternating for most of the season so far, Dop and Rose have provided a tough one-two punch between the pipes for the Falcons.
