SETTING THE SCENE...
• The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team concludes the home portion of the January schedule with a midweek matchup at the Stroh Center. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face Western Michigan University on Wednesday (Jan. 22), with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
THE STARTING FIVE (FIVE SOMEWHAT FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• The Falcons are coming off of yet another narrow loss. BGSU lost in overtime for the second time in four games, falling by a 79-72 final at Toledo on Saturday (Jan. 18).
• In each of the last four games, BGSU has led with under four minutes to go. In three of those contests, the Falcons have held a slim lead with under 1:30 left in regulation. And, in two of them – vs. Akron as well as UT – BG has been ahead with under 30 seconds remaining.
• Junior Madisen Parker hit five more three-point field goals on Saturday, giving her 61 successful triples this season and 106 in her BG career. Parker has moved into the top 15 in school history on the single-season list and the top-20 on the career chart.
• Parker has made at least one three-point field goal in each of BGSU's 17 games this season to date. She leads the entire nation in three-point field goal percentage, and is also ranked sixth or better in the land in total three-pointers made as well as triples per game.
• Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson was held scoreless vs. the Rockets on Saturday. The Lima native had scored in double digits in each of the first 16 games of the season, the third-longest season-opening streak by a BG player in the last 26 years.
PARK FROM THE ARC! (FOUR LONG-DISTANCE FACTS ABOUT NUMBER FOUR)
• Junior Madisen Parker, as mentioned, is currently leading the entire nation in three-point field-goal percentage, with a 49.2 percent success rate (a school-record pace) this season. Parker has made a team-leading 61 three-pointers this year to date, and – with at least 14 games remaining in BGSU's season – has moved into 14th place on the BGSU single-season list.
• Parker is 31 successful triples shy of tying the BG single-season record, held by the legen ... wait for it ... dary Lauren Prochaska, who hit 92 long-range shots 10 years ago (2009-10).
• The Fort Wayne, Ind., native has made at least one triple in each of this season's 17 games, and has hit three or more long-distance shots 11 times in 2019-20.
• Parker now has 106 career treys, and has moved into a tie for 19th place on the BGSU career list. Sophomore Morgan McMillen also has connected from the arc 106 times in her Falcon career to date. Not surprisingly, Prochaska holds the BG career record, with 310 successful three-pointers in her Falcon tenure (2007-11).
STAT-SHEET STUFFER
• Over the course of a game, sophomore Kadie Hempfling can be counted on to contribute to the Falcons' collective efforts in many ways. On Saturday at the U of T, Hempfling went 9-of-11 from the field, tying her career high with 19 points. She also had nine rebounds vs. the Rockets.
• Hempfling has scored at least eight points in a game on 12 occasions this year, including eight double-digit scoring efforts. She has had six double-figure rebounding games, pulling down nine boards in two other contests. And, Hempfling has had at least five assists seven times, and is the only player in the MAC with two games of 10 dimes.
• Hempfling has four double-doubles this year, with two traditional points-rebounds double-doubles and a pair of the points-assists variety.
• The Ottawa, Ohio, native enters the WMU game with career totals of 349 points, 352 rebounds and 198 assists. She is on pace to finish her BG career among the top-30 in scoring and the top five in assists. And, Hempfling's current pace would enable her to threaten Joelyn Shoup's (1982-86) BG career rebounding record of 923.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
• Two years ago, the Falcons were close to last in the nation in assists. With a total of 277 assists and an average of 9.2 helpers per game, BGSU was ranked 343rd (out of 349 teams) in the former category and 345th in the latter. Last season, BGSU improved to 72nd in the country with 15.1 assists per game, and the Falcons were 96th in the land with a total of 454 assists.
• This year, the Falcons are ranked 26th or better in the nation in both categories, with a total of 300 assists (17.6 per game) through 17 contests.
BGSU AMONG THE NCAA ASSISTS LEADERS
Year Assists (Rank) Assists/Game (Rank)
2017-18 277 (343rd of 349) 9.2 (345th of 349)
2018-19 454 (96th of 349) 15.1 (72nd of 349)
2019-20 300 (26th of 348) 17.6 (15th of 348)
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BRONCOS
• Western Michigan is 10-6 overall, and the Broncos are 3-2 in MAC play. Western has conference wins over Toledo and Ohio at home and Akron on the road, and the team's league losses have come at home to Central Michigan and on the road at Kent State. Most recently, the Broncos suffered an 80-70 setback to CMU on Saturday in Kalamazoo.
• WMU is 5-2 at home, 3-3 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites.
• Jordan Walker leads WMU with 15.2 ppg, while Breanna Mobley has 13.2 ppg and a team-leading 11.1 rpg. Mobley leads the entire MAC in both rebounding and double-doubles (12).
• Head coach Shane Clipfell returned seven letterwinners, including three starters, from a 2018-19 Bronco squad that finished with records of 10-20 overall and 4-14 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead WMU, 35-33, in the all-time series, but Western has won the last 10 meetings, including a narrow 84-82 win at the Stroh in last year's MAC opener (Jan. 5, 2019). BG's last victory over WMU came on Feb. 5, 2014. The Falcons are 18-14 at home, 14-18 on the road and 3-1 at neutral sites vs. the Broncos over the years. Much more series information can be found on page 13 of these never-tedious notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the WMU tilt, the Falcons will close the January schedule with a Saturday (Jan. 25) matchup vs. MAC East Division preseason favorite Ohio. That contest begins at 1:00 p.m. in Athens.
• Then, after a midweek bye, BG will host Miami on Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff at the Stroh.
