Box Score
DEKALB, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning to earn a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Northern Illinois University Huskies on Thursday (May 16) afternoon. The Mid-American Conference series opener was played at Ralph McKinzie Field in DeKalb, Illinois.
With two outs and two men in scoring position, Brad Croy lined a two-RBI single into right-centerfield, giving Bowling Green a 4-3 lead. Croy finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk.
The two-run single held up, as the Falcon bullpen was lights out. Griffin Parrill shoved 2.0 hitless innings, allowing just one base runner. Jeremy Spezia picked up his sixth save of the season, logging the final 2.0 innings. Spezia worked a perfect eighth inning, and pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth.
Andrew Abrahamowicz finished off a spectacular sophomore season. The right-hander surrendered two earned runs across 5.0 innings of work. Abrahamowicz ends the season with a 3.11 ERA. He struck out 61 batters in 75.1 innings of work.
Bowling Green started the scoring on the day with a pair of runs in the second. R.J. Williams got the Falcons on the board with an RBI single into right field. Williams later intentionally got himself into a pickle – running in between first and second. Williams' heads-up play allowed Tyler Haas to score from third.
The Huskies scored three unanswered runs to take a 3-2 lead – plating one in the first and two in the fifth – but Croy's seventh-inning single proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
Tomorrow's (May 17) middle game of the three-game set has been moved up to 1 p.m. EST. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. EST on Saturday, May 18.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"This was a great team win for the Falcons, and a good college baseball game overall. You can tell that our guys have not given up, and the team continues to play hard for each other. We still have work to do in order to win the series, and I expect our team to come out and play hard tomorrow. We know that Northern Illinois will play a strong game."
