Box Score
DEKALB, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Northern Illinois University on Friday (May 17) afternoon by a score of 7-5. The Mid-American Conference ballgame was played at Ralph McKinzie Field in DeKalb, Illinois.
After the Falcons had taken a 4-2 lead, Northern Illinois changed the outlook of the game with a five-run fifth inning. The Huskies scored all five of their fifth-inning runs with two outs.
Tyler Hays started the final game of his historic freshman season. Hays notched three more strikeouts, running his total to 72 on the season, which established a new freshman record at BGSU. The 72 strikeouts are third-most this decade – only behind junior-year Mike Frank (80 strikeouts in 2013) and sophomore-year Brennan Smith (80 strikeouts in 2009).
Neil Lambert tied a school record with four stolen bases, capped by a steal of home in the sixth inning that was the final run scored in the ballgame. To go along with his steal of home, Lambert swiped third base twice, while also stealing second base. Lambert was 1-for-2 on the day with two walks and three runs scored.
With his four stolen bags, Lambert joined Brandon Howard (2015), Larry Arndt (1985) and Charles Clucas (1921) as the only Falcons to record four steals in a single game.
Bowling Green broke a tied score and took a 4-2 lead with a two-run fourth. The Falcons started the frame with back-to-back doubles from Brad Croy and Lambert. Jeff Scott later scored Lambert with an RBI ground out. Scott finished the day with two RBI, as his sacrifice fly in the second inning got BGSU on the board.
R.J. Williams and Mike Malewitz posted two hits apiece for the Orange and Brown. Jake Wilson singled in the ninth for his lone hit of the ballgame. Jay Ward pitched a strong game in relief, logging 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Ward struck out two and did not issue a free pass.
Bowling Green will wrap up its 2019 baseball season on Saturday (May 18) with a 1 p.m. EST first pitch. The winner of the game will win the three-game MAC series.
