BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team concludes the 2017 regular season with the annual Battle of I-75 against the Toledo Rockets. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Scott Park Soccer Complex in Toledo. The game will determine BGSU's seed for the upcoming Mid-American Conference tournament. The Falcons will be the #3 seed with a win or tie on Thursday and the #4 seed with a loss. Bowling Green is seeking their first victory against Toledo since 2007; they are 7-13-4 in the all-time series.
LAST WEEK
Bowling Green went 1-0-1 last week in a pair of road games against divisional opponents. On Thursday, the Falcons played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Ohio. Madison Schupbach scored in the 12th minute off an Ohio turnover to give BGSU a lead, but Ohio tied it 3:56 into the second half. Victoria Cope saved eight shots in the second half and overtime to preserve the tie. On Sunday, BGSU defeated the MAC East Division champion Kent State 3-1. Chelsee Washington scored twice, including the game-winner with 20:19 left in the game. The win clinched a home game in the MAC Tournament for the Falcons.Â
SCOUTING TOLEDO
The Rockets are currently 8-7-3 overall and 5-3-2 against the MAC. They are in second place in the Western Division, and with 17 points, they are currently positioned fourth for potential seeding in the MAC Tournament. A win over BGSU would clinch the third seed; a loss or a tie would land the Rockets anywhere from fourth to sixth. After starting the MAC season 4-1-2, Toledo lost a pair of 1-0 games to Buffalo and Kent state before winning 2-1 at Ohio last Sunday.
Toledo has been outscored 24-23 in 2017 and is eighth in the MAC in goals allowed (1.33/game) and fourth in goals scored (1.28/game). Hannah Scafaria is tied for third in the MAC with eight goals, while Isa Echeverri is tied for eighth with five. Alena Sidwell and Sophie Pohl are tied for the team lead with three assists. Goalkeeper Madison Perrin has started every game (8-7-3) and has five shutouts. She has allowed 24 goals against 111 shots for a goals against average of 1.27 and a save percentage of .784.
Toledo head coach T.J. Buchholz is in his third season with the Rockets. He owns a record of 25-29-4 at Toledo and an 13-16-3 mark in MAC games. His inaugural 2015 team was a quarterfinalist in the MAC Tournament.
CRACKING THE CODE
Prior to BGSU's visit, Kent State's defense had been spectacular over their last 13 games. After giving up two goals apiece in three of their first four games, KSU had given up a total of three in their last 13 and only two in nine conference games. They entered the BGSU game with a scoreless streak of 505:09 and had pitched five straight shutouts. However, in a battle of the MAC's best offense versus the MAC's best defense, it was no contest. the Falcons racked up 14 shots and nine shots on goal in just the first half and compiled 21 shots and 13 shots on goal in total, while their defense only permitted five shots and just two shots on goal. The Falcons were the first team all season to score three goals on KSU, and Chelsee Washington was the first to post two individual goals against the Golden Flashes in 2017.
CHELSEE IN CHARGE
Chelsee Washington played an enormous role in Bowling Green's 3-1 win against MAC Eastern Division champion Kent State. In the 37th minute, Washington headed in a diagonal pass from Alexis Fricke to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. It was the first goal scored against KSU in 541:08. After the Golden Flashes evened the match in the second half, Washington drilled in a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Marissa Swindell. The goal served as the eventual game-winner, which was the first of her career. She is the first player to score twice against KSU in 2017, and her two goals equal the total scored against KSU in their first nine MAC games. Washington's two goals were her only two shots of the game in 39 minutes as a primary reserve..
FANTASTIC FLEAKÂ
Senior forward Skylar Fleak is having one of the best offensive seasons in BGSU history. Against Buffalo, she posted her second hat trick of 2017 with three goals in 20:16, the fourth-fastest hat trick by a Falcon, as BGSU came back from 2-0 down to beat Buffalo. Her first hat trick was a four-goal game at Oakland. She added an assist in a 2-0 win over Akron for a seven-point weekend. She now has 11 goals and 27 points (each third-most in BGSU history) and a personal-best five assists. She leads the MAC in points and is second in goals; she ranks in the top 25 nationally for both. In her career, Fleak has 27 goals (third most at BGSU) and 64 points (fourth most at BGSU). Her efforts have earned three MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards in 2017.
SENSATIONAL SCHUPBACH
BGSU scored five times across two wins against Buffalo and Akron, and senior Madison Schupbach played a role in four of them. Against Buffalo, she posted a pair of assists, the last of which came via a corner kick that Skylar Fleak headed home for the game-winner in a two-goal comeback. In the 2-0 win over Akron, Schupbach scored her first career game-winning goal and assisted on the second. Last weekend, she added BGSU's only goal in a 1-1 draw at Ohio. Schupbach's six assists in 2017 have doubled her career total, and she has a personal-best four goals and 14 points.
FIRST-TIME SCORERS
The Falcons feature eight first-year players on their 2017 roster, and four of them have combined for seven of the team's 36 goals. Marissa Swindell has three goals, while Sophia Barnes owns two. Paige Casto's goal at Western Michigan was the first of her career, and Nikhita Jacob scored at Detroit Mercy. First year Falcons have also combined for 13 of the team's 41 assists. Additionally, junior Alexis Fricke posted her first career goal in 2017.
HOORAY FOR HUBERT
Redshirt junior Erica Hubert has been a constant source of offense for the Falcons in 2017. She earned a game-winning assist and an insurance goal in BGSU's 2-0 win over Akron. That followed a four-point weekend against EMU and CMU. Most recently, she scored the final goal in the Falcons' 3-1 win at Kent State. In all, she has four goals and three assists in her last seven games. She leads BGSU with 72 shots and 33 shots on goal. Hubert is second in goals (7) and points (17).
OFFENSE ON THE PROWL
BGSU continues to own the MAC's best offense. They have a league-best 36 goals (2.12/game), scored by 11 different players. Fourteen players have combined for a MAC-best 41 assists (2.41/game). The Falcons are also first with 17.71 shots per game The Falcons have outshot their opponents in all but one game this year and have a current margin of 301-164 (1.84:1). BGSU is on pace for its most shots (336) and most goals (40) since 2004, fewest-ever shots allowed (183), and its fewest goals allowed since 2008 (22).
SUNDAY FUN-DAY
Bowling Green has been very successful on Sundays in 2017. After losing to #20 Butler 2-0 on Sunday, Aug. 27, the Falcons have won their last six Sunday contests. They started the streak with a 2-0 win on Senior Day over Wright State, then routed Miami 4-1. In October, they've beaten Northern Illinois (2-1), Central Michigan (3-1), Akron (2-0) and Kent State (3-1) on Sundays. Dating back to the start of 2016, the Falcons are 10-4-1 on Sunday and 9-11-0 on all other days.
