JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After taking yesterday's season opener, the Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped a 12-1 decision to the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. ETSU used a six-run fourth to pull away with the win.
The two schools – who are both 1-1 now on the young season – will meet tomorrow for the rubber match.
"It was just one of those days where not much went right for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "The good thing is we put ourselves in a good situation by winning yesterday, and we can still take this series by taking tomorrow's ballgame."
In the middle of the contest, East Tennessee scored across four-straight innings – plating three in the third, six in the fourth, and one apiece in both the fifth and sixth – to jump out to a commanding 11-0 lead. The Buccaneers would tack on one more run in the eighth.
In total, ETSU out-hit BGSU, 16-5. Two of those BGSU hits were registered by Nick Glanzman, who finished the day 2-for-4. Glanzman also knocked home Brad Croy in the top of the ninth for BGSU's only run of the ballgame. Croy pinch-hit for Greg Basalyga in the ninth, and promptly singled in his first-career plate appearance.
Bowling Green starter Zac Carey got off to a nice start. He allowed leadoff singles in the first two innings of the ballgame, but was able to escape unscathed both times. A pair of infield singles in the third preceded a Kevin Phillips three-run home run to open the game's scoring. In the fourth, an error help set up an Aaron Maher two-run shot, extending the ETSU lead to 5-0.
Carey lasted 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned), before giving way to freshman Chase Antle. Antle made his collegiate debut in the six-run fourth, and although he allowed two runs to score (one of which was a runner inherited from Carey), the righty recorded a pair of strikeouts in his one inning of work – the second of which allowed Antle to leave the bases loaded.
The Falcons did have a chance to take a lead in the second, as Glanzman led off the frame with a single, and was moved into scoring position following a Hunter Clanin sacrifice bunt. But ETSU starter Victor Gonzalez – who threw six innings of shutout ball en route to earning the victory – left him right there.
Redshirt-freshman right-handed pitcher Zach Kendall made his collegiate debut in the fifth, and limited the damage, allowing just one run, which was unearned. He threw to junior catcher Dan Ferguson, who was brought on in the frame to make his Falcon debut.
Kendall went on to pitch the sixth and seventh, as well. Overall, he logged three innings, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two and walking one.
Along with Antle, Kendall, Ferguson and Croy, two more Falcons also made their Bowling Green debuts. Freshman R.J. Williams was brought on to replace Matt Smith in left field in the sixth, while fellow freshman Blake Jenkins took over for Hunter Clanin in right field in the seventh.
Bowling Green and East Tennessee will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Senior Andrew Lacinak will get the start for the Orange and Brown. The Falcons will be in Seattle next weekend to take on Seattle University over Feb. 26-28 in a four-game set.
