Kent, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team competed in just two events on the first day of the 2016-17 season but the Falcons hit for three personal bests and two Mid-American Conference automatic qualifiers Friday at Kent State's Golden Flashes Gala.
The Falcons were especially strong in the weight throw as redshirt senior Kayla Velasquez broke her previous best by more than a foot, throwing 59-feet-11.25. She easily exceed the MAC's automatic qualifying distance of 58-8 and her own previous best of 58-10.25.
Elizabeth Iverson, a junior transfer from Purdue, made an early statement by throwing 58-11.25 to also become an auto qualifier to the MAC Championship meet. Redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson added a personal best toss of 57-4.75, besting her previous best mark of 56-9.25. In her first collegiate meet, freshman Kaila Butler threw 48-1.25.
"We had a solid performance in the weight throw," BGSU throws coach Derrick Vicars said. "It was a great first meet and we competed well. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but I'm happy with today's outcome."
Senior Raven Porter impressed in the long jump, breaking her indoor career long with a mark of 18-4.25 to finish second. She had previously jumped as far as 18-0.25 during the indoor season.
