Final Golden Flashes Gala Results
Kent, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team closed the opening weekend of the 2016-17 season by capturing a school record and four Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks at the Golden Flashes Gala Saturday.
Redshirt senior Taylor Rambo became the third Falcon in three years to break the school record in the non-traditional 300 meter race. Although the distance is not raced in the postseason, the Falcons have seen the school record broken in each of the past three years. Brittany Sinclair set the record at 40.70 seconds twice in 2015 and Kera Lamotte raced to a 40.56 a year ago. Rambo again edged the school record forward with a time of 40.46 seconds Saturday.
The Falcons won four events on the second day of competition, led by two fantastic races from junior Dorresha Green in the 60. She set a new personal best with a time of 7.63 seconds in the prelims and then shattered that time to win the finals in 7.50 seconds. That is a MAC auto qualifying time and makes her the second-fastest female in program history, behind only Jeanette Pettigrew, who beat that time four times during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Junior Kyla Paster also had two solid races in the 60, qualifying for finals with a time of 7.75 seconds, fourth-fastest at the meet. She jumped two places in the finals and was runner-up to Green with a time of 7.67.
In the 200, junior Cortisha Short also took home medalist honors with a personal best time of 24.82 seconds. That makes her the fifth-fastest woman in program history at that distance.
In the shot put, the Falcons finished first, third and fifth. Redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson, an NCAA qualifier in the shot put during outdoor season, won the meet with a personal best throw of 51-feet-10.5. That is the second-longest throw in program history. Makenzie Wheat, the school-record holder in the shot put, placed third at 49-11, also earning a MAC auto qualifying distance. Junior transfer Elizabeth Iversen was fifth with a distance of 48-7.25.
The other event victory came in the high jump, where Raven Porter opened her senior season by leaping 5-5 (1.65m).
In the triple jump, Paster punched her automatic ticket to the MAC Championships by jumping a personal best 38-9.75. She ranks fifth all-time at BGSU in the event.
Other strong finishes came in the 400 as senior Brianna Johnson placed second overall, followed by freshman teammates Brianna Tidmore and Mis'cha Sellers. The 1600 relay team of Rachel Stute, Tidmore, Sellers and Chasatea Brown placed fourth.
"Overall, I'm pleased with today's performances," Associate Head Coach James Gildon said. "We took steps in the right direction and I look forward to continuing that process as we navigate through the season."
In total, the Falcons exceeded MAC automatic qualifying marks six times on the opening weekend of the season and added 11 top-three finishes.
The Falcons are now off until hosting the BG Opener Jan. 7, beginning at 11 am at Perry Fieldhouse.
