This Week In Falcon Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball team returns to the diamond for four games this week, including Tuesday's matchup with the Michigan Wolverines on the road. The Falcons and Wolverines will do battle beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at the Wilpon Baseball Complex. The Falcons enter the week at 5-13 overall, while Michigan is 11-11 on the season. Following the midweek game in Ann Arbor, the Falcons will travel to DeKalb, Ill. for a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Northern Illinois.
They Said It
"This week will be crucial for us, starting with Tuesday's game at Michigan," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "They are a very good program out of the Big Ten, and it will certainly be a challenge for us. We need to be ready to play well in all three phases to give ourselves a chance on the road."
About The Wolverines
University of Michigan enters Tuesday's game with an overall record of 11-11 on the season. The Wolverines are 0-3 in the Big Ten Conference after getting swept over the weekend on the road at Nebraska. Tuesday's game will be the home opener of the 2015 season for the Wolverines.
UM is coached by Eric Bakich, who is in his third season at the helm of the Wolverines. Bakich and the Wolverines have won 60 games to date in his three seasons, including 30 wins a season ago. The Wolverines are assisted by coaches Sean Kenny, Nick Schnabel, and Aaron Etchison.
The Wolverines' season began at Long Beach State, where they were defeated in 2-of-3 by the Dirtbags. The following weekend saw Michigan travel to Savannah, Ga., where they lost 3-of-4 to Tennessee Tech and Davidson. The Maize and Blue then won eight straight games, starting with a four-game sweep over Siena in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Since the eight-game winning streak, Michigan has lost 6-of-7 games entering Tuesday. The Wolverines have played two opponents from the MAC, defeating Toledo (19-5) and losing to Akron (2-0).
As a team, Michigan is hitting .297 with an earned run average of 3.96. Jackson Glines, hitting .472 on the season, leads the Wolverines offensively. He has played in 20 games, scoring 15 runs with 11 RBI. UM is 16-of-25 in stolen base attempts this season, while opponents are just 8-for-16. RHP Matt Ogden will start on the mound for UM on Tuesday. He enters the game with a record of 0-1 and an earned run average of 5.14.
Weekend Recap
Bowling Green was swept over the weekend to begin Mid-American Conference play against Ball State. The Falcons managed just three hits in the series' opener, a 7-0 loss to the Cardinals. In Saturday's doubleheader sweep, the Falcons were able to muster just three runs, losing 6-1 and 5-2. The big inning doomed the Falcons, as Ball State scored three runs in three different innings, including both of the eighth innings, on Saturday.
What's Next
Following the midweek game at Michigan, the Falcons will look to get into the win column in MAC play when they travel to Northern Illinois for a three-game set against the Huskies. Last season, BGSU took 2-of-3 from NIU in a "home" series played in Westfield, Ind.
Falcons Down UM For Fifth Straight Win
BOX SCORE (4-22-14)
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Bowling Green State University went on the road to University of Michigan on Tuesday, defeating the Wolverines for the second time in three years with a 7-4 triumph. The Falcons broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh, en route to their fifth straight victory. Bowling Green improves to 17-19 on the season with the win.
Bowling Green did much of their damage after two were out in the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Jeremy Shay walked with two outs in the top of the first, giving the Falcons a base runner to get the rally started. After a T.J. Losby single, Trey Keegan would walk to load the bases.
Â
With the bases loaded and two outs, Patrick Lancaster would double into left field to score two Falcons for an early advantage. Keegan would then come home on a throwing error by Michigan, and Bowling Green led 3-0 after half an inning.
Â
After the Falcons had added a run in the top of the third, Michigan would counter with four runs of their own to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
In the top of the ninth the Falcons would get a key insurance run. Thomas doubled with two outs, and after a walk to Shay, scored on an RBI base hit by Losby.
Â
Leading 7-4, Trevor Blaylock would come into the game to nail it down, retiring the Wolverines in order for his first save of the season. Blaylock is 1-0 with a save in his career versus Michigan.
The Falcon Coaching Staff
Bowling Green is coached by Danny Schmitz, who is in his 25th season at the helm of the Orange and Brown. Schmitz has won 642 career games, which is the third-most in Mid-American Conference history. The skipper of the Falcons has won more games in a Falcon uniform than any other coach in school history has even coached in. Schmitz is assisted by Rick Blanc, who is in his eighth season as an assistant at BGSU. Blanc manages the Falcons' pitching staff and recruiting for Schmitz. Ryan Shay, a former great under Schmitz, returns to Bowling Green as the Falcons' hitting coach. Shay, who is in his first season as an assistant coach, also works with the BGSU infielders. Volunteer coach Garrett Gray, who is in his second season, works with the Falcons' hitters and catchers.
Seventh Inning Stretch
Bowling Green has made the seventh inning theirs so far through the first 18 games of the 2015 season, outscoring opponents 17-2 in the inning.
First Inning Falcons
The Falcons have also gotten off to a lot of leads this season, especially in the first inning of games. BGSU has outscored the opposition 18-8 so far in 2015. The Falcons have scored in the first inning seven times this year, and have scored first in 10 games thus far.
Sixth Sense
The first six innings have been key for the Orange and Brown this season, as they are undefeated when leading after six innings. However, the Falcons have not won a game this season when trailing after six innings.
Tuesday On Turf
The Falcons have had success playing on both Tuesday and turf so far this season, both of which will occur in Ann Arbor this week. The Falcons are 2-0 on Tuesday this season, having swept a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational over spring break. On turf, Bowling Green is 2-1 this season, outscoring opponents 32-20.
Falcon Homecoming
Tuesday's game at Michigan will serve as a homecoming for three Falcons who hail for the state of Michigan. Ann Arbor native Rob Zenas will return to his hometown. Zenas has pitched in four games this season and is yet to allow an earned run. West Bloomfield native Randy Righter will also return to his home state when the Falcons travel to UM tomorrow. Righter is hitting .299 with four doubles and three home runs. Sparta native Kory Brown will also take the field Tuesday, roaming centerfield for the Orange and Brown.
