WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored 25 runs on Tuesday en route to a doubleheader sweep in the RussMatt Invitational. The Falcons defeated Bucknell University 9-3 in the first game, before beating Butler University 16-14 in the nightcap to complete the sweep. The games were played at Chain O'Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla., the former spring training home of both the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
"We came out and swung the bats well today to pick up two wins," head coach Danny Schmitz started. "Our pitchers battled all day, including several pitchers who haven't gotten a lot of time on the mound yet this year. It was a great start to our week in Florida and a good way to bounce back after this past weekend."
Â
Bowling Green 9, Bucknell 3
The Falcons got off to a fast start in the first game against Bucknell, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Orange and Brown scored all nine of their runs in the first five innings of the game, before shutting down the Bison for the win.
Â
Tyler Anderson picked up the win on the mound, going four innings in relief for the win. Brett Fitzwater started for the Falcons, while Tony Landi finished things off with the final 1.2 innings. Anderson improved his season record to 1-0 on the season.
Â
Randy Righter led the Falcons in the game, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Matt Smith recorded two hits in the game, including his first career triple in the top of the third. Greg Basalyga also tripled in the game, the first of his career.
Â
The Falcons would add a single run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings to grab a 6-3 lead after four innings of play.
Â
Bowling Green would extend their lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth, as Righter drove home Smith with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Kory Brown stepped to the dish and crushed a two-run home run over the wall in left field—the first of his career—for a six-run advantage.
Â
Bucknell would make things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases, but Landi was able to work out of the jam to preserve the victory for the Falcons.
Â
Bowling Green 16, Butler 14
Game two was a slugfest from the get-go, as Bowling Green scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Howard got things started with a single up the middle and would move into scoring position on a Nick Glanzman sacrifice bunt. Howard then stole third before a walk to Trey Keegan, giving the Falcons runners on the corners. On the very next pitch, Keegan moved into scoring position with a stolen base.
Â
With two runners on base, Righter's groundout brought home Howard and move Keegan to third, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Two consecutive errors gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead, and a Hunter Clanin double down the left field line extended the lead to 3-0. With runners on second and third, Tyler Greiner picked up his first hit of the season, a single up the middle, to give the Orange and Brown a 5-0 lead after one.
Â
Butler responded with six runs in the next two innings, including a four-spot in the top of the second. Butler used the big inning on Tuesday afternoon to stay in the ballgame, scoring four runs in three separate innings.
Â
Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons once again took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. A Keegan two-out single scored Howard to give the Falcons a 7-6 lead, and later in the inning a Smith single on an 0-2 pitch extended the lead to 8-6. Righter scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to push Bowling Green's lead to 9-6.
Â
Butler took the lead back from the Falcons in the top of the fifth, scoring four unearned runs to grab a 10-9 lead. But, the Falcons bounced right back in the home half of the inning, scoring four runs to take the lead for good—13-10.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, BGSU did all of their damage with two outs. Kory Brown started things out with a single and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Howard then singled up the middle to score Brown and tie the game at 10 runs apiece. After stealing two bases, Howard scored on a Nick Glanzman double off the base of the wall in left-centerfield. Leading 11-10, Trey Keegan put an exclamation mark on the inning, hitting his first home run of the season to give the Falcons a 13-10 lead.
Â
Bowling Green would add three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, before holding on for the 16-14 win in the ninth. Tony Landi pitched the final inning, picking up his first save of the season.
Â
The Falcons will return to the field on Wednesday afternoon, when they take on Illinois State at 4:00 p.m. inside Chain O'Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
