Lakewood Ranch, Florida – In a day that saw both the second and third rounds of play shortened to just nine holes due to inclement weather over the first round of play on Monday, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team went 1-1 overall on day two to take third-place honors at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge held at the Royal Lakes Golf Course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
BGSU suffered a 3-2 loss in the second round of play against #1 Eastern Michigan, but bounced back to defeat #2 Western Michigan 4-1 in the final round to claim third-place overall. The Falcons went 2-1 overall for the two-day event.
"(On the second round) We did all we could do for a position to win and move ahead. We were up on the number 1 seed. The team fought so hard, taking it to the fifth match on the final hole and losing to a long birdie putt. A heartbreaker in golf," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "I am so proud of our team as they battled in the third matches and won 4-1 against the number 2 seed WMU. Overall we saw gritty play and execution under pressure. This is a great start for the spring season."
In the 3-2 loss to the top-seeded Eastern Michigan Eagles, the Falcons picked up wins from Patricia Holt at the number two spot and Fran Rodriguez at the number five slot.
Playing on the front nine, Holt and her opponent Karyn Lee Ping went back-and-forth over the first four holes to make the match all square until the BGSU senior posted three straight wins on holes five, six and seven to earn the 3&2 win over the nine-hole contest.
BGSU's Rodriguez matched Kylie Raines shot for shot over the first two holes before taking two of the next three holes from Raines to take a two-hole lead through the first five holes of play. The sophomore went on to win hole number eight and take the 3&1 win over Raines.
In the other three matches, Shelby Wilson played all nine holes before suffering a 2UP loss to Kelsey Murphy at the number one spot, while at the number three position Mikayla Baer was edged by Lois Schoof 2&1 over eight holes. Junior Hannah Lewis fell behind by three holes early and ran out of time in a 3&2 loss to Thelma Beck at the number four spot.
In the 4-1 win over the Broncos of Western Michigan, the Falcons got wins from Wilson, Holt, Lewis and Rodriguez.
Wilson took an early lead with a win on hole number 10 and then took a two-hole lead with a victory on hole number 12. Watkins got to within one hole of Wilson, yet the senior closed the nine-hole match out with a win on 18 to secure the 2UP win.
Holt dominated her match, taking holes number 11, 13, 14, 15 over the first six holes on the back nine to when easily at 4&3 over Julia Champion of WMU.
In Lewis' contest, the BGSU junior fell behind on the very first hole, but bounced back to take holes 12, 13, 14 and then 18 to earn the 3UP win over Anna Wilcoxson of WMU.
In Rodriguez's match, the Falcon sophomore trailed after the first hole of play on number 10, but battled back to win at holes 13 and 14 to take a one-hole lead over Laura Moutrey. Moutrey would tie the match back up at all square with a win on 16, however, Rodriguez would win at 17 and match Moutrey at hole number 18 to hold on for the 1UP win.
Baer suffered a 3-2 loss to Chole Lawrie of WMU at the number three spot,
