Falcons Battle Rain and Wind on Day One of 2014 MAC Championships

Fishers, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opened up the 2014 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships on Friday with a first round team score of 330, as the Falcons battled rain, wind and wet course conditions throughout much of the 18-holes of play at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
The Falcons struggled with consistency on day one, as BGSU carded a team-score of 330, +42, on Friday to sit in nine-place overall out of the nine team field. Bowling Green is eight strokes behind eighth-place Western Michigan who carded a first round team score of 322, +34.
BGSU sophomore Lily Bartell shot a team-low round of 81, +9, on Friday, putting her in a tie for 26th-place overall. Bartell had a team-high 12 pars and posted a team-best par-3 scoring average of 3.00, even par.
Junior Shelby Wilson turned in an 82, +10, to sit in a tie for 30th, while senior Bailey Arnold and fellow junior Patricia Holt carded rounds of 83, +11, and 84, +12, respectively on Friday to place them in ties at 33rd and 36th overall. Wilson led BGSU with a par-4 scoring average of 4.30, +3, on day one, while Arnold had two birdies over her 18-holes of play.
Freshman Mikayla Baer rounded out the Falcons' lineup, as she recorded a first round 88, +16, to finish day one in 44th-place overall.
Kent State leads the tournament field with a round one team score of 296, +8, just six strokes ahead of second-place Toledo and the Rockets' team score of 302, +14.
Akron finished day one in third-place at 313, +25, while Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan are tied for fourth-place overall with identical team scores of 314, +26.
The individual lead belongs to two players through 18-holes of play, as Toledo's Stephanie St. Jean and Kent State's Wad Phaewchimplee are tied atop of the leaderboard with first round scores of 72, even par.
Round two will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning with the Falcons teeing off in the first five pairings.
