Leading Off
The Bowling Green State University baseball team, seeded sixth, will enter their 12th Mid-American Conference Tournament under Danny Schmitz. The Falcons who have an all-time record of 12-22 in the MAC Tournament, qualified with a walk-off win over Buffalo in the regular season finale. The Falcons will begin Tournament play against the No. 3 seed Northern Illinois, playing at 12:30 on Wednesday. The Tournament will be played at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
No. 1 Kent State (34-21 | 20-7 MAC)
Kent State, coming off a 2012 season in which they reached the College World Series, will once again go into the MAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Golden Flashes, after beginning the regular season at just 1-9, come into the tournament having won 15 of their last 16 games. Coached by Scott Stricklin, KSU hits .279 as a team, with an ERA of 3.91. During the regular season, the Golden Flashes swept the Falcons, a three-game series played during week six in Kent, Ohio.
No. 2 Buffalo (32-22 | 19-7 MAC)
Buffalo, coming off a 2012 season in which they made their first appearance in the MAC Tournament in school history, finished just one-half game behind Kent State for the MAC regular season crown. The Bulls, coached by Ron Torgalski, will be the No. 2 seed in this week's MAC Tournament. Buffalo is batting .274 as a squad, while posting an ERA of 3.65. The Bulls were able to take two out of three from the Falcons in the final weekend of the regular season, but the Falcons salvaged the series with a walk-off win on Saturday. With that win, the Orange and Brown clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament and kept Toledo from winning the regular season crown.
No. 3 Northern Illinois (22-32 | 16-11 MAC)
Northern Illinois has completed an unbelievable turnaround, after finishing the 2012 season at the bottom of the MAC standings. The Huskies come into the MAC Tournament as the MAC West champion, defeating Ball State in extra innings on Saturday to take the title. The Huskies are batting .251 with a team ERA 4.88. The Falcons and Huskies did not play during the regular season. In fact, these two teams have not met since 2011, when NIU knocked BGSU out of the MAC Tournament.
No. 4 Ball State (28-23 | 15-12 MAC)
Rich Maloney, in his first year of his second stint at Ball State, is the only other coach besides Danny Schmitz with 600 career victories. The Cardinals, who just missed out on the West Division crown, will take on Miami in the first round of the tournament. BSU has a batting average of .272 and an ERA of 3.70. Scott Baker, the Cardinals' ace, was named the MAC Pitcher of the Year. The Orange and Brown split a midweek series with Cardinals during the regular season, with each team winning on the road.
No. 5 Miami (24-27 | 13-12 MAC)
Miami finished the regular season in third place in the East Division. The RedHawks, coached by Dan Simonds, bat .277 with an ERA of 4.99. Miami has four regulars batting over .330. The Falcons took two out of three from the RedHawks during the regular season. The Falcons won on Friday and Sunday, book-ending a 9-1 loss on Saturday.
No. 6 Bowling Green (20-28 | 13-14 MAC)
The Falcons come into the MAC Tournament riding some momentum, defeating Buffalo in come-from-behind fashion on Saturday to clinch a berth. The Orange and Brown would not have qualified for the tournament with a loss. After starting the season 4-15, the Falcons were able to turn it around, going 16-13 over the final two months. Bowling Green is hitting .278 with a team ERA of 3.96.
No. 7 Toledo (22-31 | 13-14 MAC)
Toledo enters the week as the No. 7 seed, as they took 2-out-of-3 over Eastern Michigan last weekend on the road to secure their spot. The Rockets, coached by Cory Mee, turned it on late after a 4-8 start in MAC play this season. As a team, UT bats .286 and has an ERA of 4.62. In week four of the MAC's regular season schedule, the Falcons went on the road to UT's Scott Park, sweeping the Rockets. It was the first sweep for the Orange and Brown since 2011.
No. 8 Central Michigan (25-30 | 12-15 MAC)
The Chippewas made an improbable run to the MAC Tournament's No. 8 seed, winning the final two games of the regular season, and receiving some help to get in. Coached by Steve Jaksa, CMU bats .257 with an ERA of 3.66. During a crucial stretch in the schedule, the Falcons were able to begin their turnaround with a 2-to-1 series victory over the Chippewas. The Falcons took the first two games of that series, before CMU salvaged it with a game-three win.
All-Time In The MAC Tournament
Making their 12th appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament during Danny Schmitz's 23-year tenure. the Orange and Brown have a record of just 12-22 all-time. The most successful appearance in the MAC Tournament came in 2010 when they won three games, falling just one game short of the championship contest. The Falcons appeared in the final four tournament's held in Chillicothe, but did not qualify last season, the first time it was held in Avon.
T.J. Leads The Way
After being named a captain for the 2013 season, junior T.J. Losby has not led only off the field, but on it as well. Losby leads the team in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.346), runs (30), and RBI (37). Losby has thrown out 42.5% of attempted base stealers, making himself a legitimate contender for not only first team All-MAC, but a Player of the Year candidate, as well.
Shay Plays His Way To The Top
Junior Jeremy Shay has come into his own since the beginning of MAC play, batting .400 during league play. Shay leads the Falcons during conference play, knocking 12 doubles and five home runs in league play alone. Shay has 28 RBI in 24 MAC games, slugging an astonishing .684 to lead the league.
Lancaster Sends The Falcons To Avon
With his two triple day on Saturday (May 18), Patrick Lancaster was able to propel the Falcons into the MAC Tournament. The two triples by Lancaster marked the first time that a Falcons' player has had two in one game since May 6, 2007. In that game on Saturday, Lancaster's second triple was a walk-off, scoring Matt PItzulo from first on the play to defeat Buffalo 5-4.
Welcome Back
The Falcons find themselves back in the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since 2011. Following four straight trips from 2008-11, the Orange and Brown did not qualify in 2012. In 2013, the Falcons will not only return to the MAC Tournament, but will make their first appearance at Avon's All Pro Freight Stadium - the new home of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
