Final Stats: Game 14: (ISU 3 - BGSU 1) | Game 15: (ISU 5 - BGSU 0)
NORMAL, Ill.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in doubleheader action on Saturday, losing by scores of 3-1 and 5-0 at Illinois State. The games, which were played in windy conditions with temperatures in the mid-30s, were held at The Corn Crib in Normal, Ill. With the losses, the Falcons are now the owners of a 4-11 record.
Game One
The first game on Saturday was a seven-inning contest, with Mike Frank going six innings for the complete-game loss. Frank allowed just five hits while striking out five Redbirds.
Illinois State took advantage of the strong wind blowing out to right field early on, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second to grab an early lead.
The Falcons got their only hit of the first game on a Matt Smith single to lead off the top of the third. Brian Bien would sacrifice him over to second, and two ensuing errors would help the Orange and Brown tie the game at one.
The Redbirds would get what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the third, coming on a solo home run to center field.
From there, Redbird starter Dan Savas would shut down the Falcons. Savas picked up the win in game one, going the distance and allowing just the one hit. Savas also walked three.
ISU tacked on their third run in the bottom of the fifth and would hang on for the 3-1 victory from there.
Game Two
The Falcons would outhit Illinois State in game two, but failed to get the timely hit in the 5-0 loss. True freshman Brett Fitzwater was tagged with the loss, going 3.2 innings while striking out four.
ISU got on the board in the bottom of the first, as they would get two doubles in the inning to jump out to an early lead.
In the second, the Redbirds continued to put the pressure on the southpaw Fitzwater, turning a one-out double into a 2-0 lead.
The freshman from Fairview, Ohio would come back with a strong third inning, setting Illinois State down in order in the inning.
ISU would get another double in the fourth, before an RBI single would bring home the runner to increase the lead to 3-0. A few batters later, the Redbirds would hit their third home run of the day, this time a two-run shot to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Falcons would outhit Illinois State 6-1 over the final five innings of the ballgame, but the Orange and Brown could not capitalize on the base runners the rest of the way.
Bowling Green stranded six runners in the game, while also hitting into two double plays.
The two teams will finish the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT with game four of the series. Trevor Blaylock will start on the mound for the Falcons.
