Falcons Lose Series Finale At Illinois State
March 17, 2013 | Baseball
Game 16: Illinois State 6, Bowling Green 3
NORMAL, Ill.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team could not complete a ninth-inning comeback on Sunday, dropping the series finale at Illinois State by a 6-3 final score. The Falcons could only manage five hits on the afternoon, as Illinois State starter Brad Sorkin went eight innings for the win. Trevor Blaylock pitched five strong innings in the loss, allowing just one earned run.
The Redbirds scored first on Sunday, notching an unearned run in the bottom of the second. ISU would get two-straight one-out singles in the second, the latter yielding a run with the help of an error by the Falcons. On that play, Redbird second baseman Brock Stewart smacked a single into right field, but the ball would get all the way to the wall on a defensive misplay, allowing Zac Johnson to score from first, and Stewart to advance to second.
The Orange and Brown got their first hit of the day in the third inning, when Brandon Howard lined a single up the middle. Brian Bien would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Howard into scoring position with one out for the top of the order. A strikeout and ground out would end the threat, keeping Illinois State's 1-0 lead in tact.
After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth for the Falcon bats, ISU would increase their lead to 3-0. Following a one-out double down the left field line, ISU had a runner in scoring position. Blaylock would make a pitch to get a ground ball and keep the runner at second, but the throw would sail into the Redbirds' dugout, allowing the lead to grow to 2-0. The very next batter would double, and the Falcons found themselves in a 3-0 hole after four innings.
Over the next three innings neither team would threaten, as the two teams combined for just four base runners in that span.
The Falcons would score their first run of the ballgame in the top of the eighth, thanks to a Patrick Lancaster fielder's choice which scored Jesse Rait.
Chances for a comeback looked bleak following a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for Illinois State, a wind-aided fly ball that just carried over the fence in right field.
Trailing 6-1 going into their last at-bat, the Falcons would put the pressure on new ISU pitcher Matt Schmitt. The first three Falcons reached base in the inning, before a Jeremy Shay sacrifice fly to deep right field would get the Orange and Brown within four, at 6-2.
Rait would be hit by the very next pitch, loading the bases for BGSU and bringing the tying run to the plate. Howard would hit a chopper up the middle, with the shortstop stepping on the bag for the fielder's choice and the second out of the inning. On that play, Matt Smith would score to pull the Falcons to within 6-3.
Danny Schmitz would utilize Matt Pitzulo off the bench as a pinch-hitter and the tying run, but ISU pitcher Jeremy Rhoades would win the battle, preserving the 6-3 victory for the Redbirds.
With the win, ISU improves to 9-9, taking 3-of-4 from the Falcons. BGSU drops to 4-12 with the defeat.
Bowling Green will now return to Ohio to begin a four-game home stand on Tuesday, with first pitch against Dayton set for 3 p.m. Following Tuesday's game, the Falcons will welcome Western Michigan to town for a three-game set to open up Mid-American Conference action.
