About Lake Superior State
The Lake Superior State men's ice hockey program began in 1966 as a member in the NAIA, and eventually joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In 2013, LSSU joined six other teams to join a new 10-team league in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Lakers are lead by eighth year head coach Jim Roque. Over the past three seasons, Roque has lead the Lakers to home ice advantage in the first round of the CCHA playoffs and has compiled a 32-20-8 record at the Taffy Abel Arena.
All-Time Series
The weekend series between the Falcons and Lakers will mark the 155th and 156th time these two teams will play each other. Bowling Green holds a 77-67-10 all-time record against Lake Superior State. Since 2000, BGSU has compiled an 11-7-1 record against the Lakers at the BGSU Ice Arena, while only coming away with a 6-9-4 mark at Taffy Abel Arena.
Weekend Review (Minnesota State)
Game 1: BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Minnesota State University on Friday night (Nov. 22), 4-3, in a thrilling overtime Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown. Playing in front of 2,372 Falcon faithful at the BGSU Ice Arena, the Orange and Brown saw two different skaters score goals, while sophomore goaltender Tommy Burke stopped 21-of-24 shots.
Game 2: BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Minnesota State University on Saturday night (Nov. 23), falling to the Mavericks 3-2 in overtime. Playing in front of 2,316 Falcon faithful at the BGSU Ice Arena, the Falcons saw two skaters score goals, while freshman goaltender Tomas Sholl turned away 30-for-33 shots in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown.

In Sault Ste. Marie, No. 16-ranked Lake Superior State returns to the friendly ice at Taffy Abel Arena (4000) after playing six of their last eight games, including four league contests, on the road. The Lakers (7-4-1, 3-3-0 WCHA) will engage Bowling Green (6-5-3, 4-3-1 WCHA) at 7:37 pm ET on Friday and at 7:07 pm ET on Saturday.
WCHA Love
After an impressive start to the season for some teams in the WCHA, the polls have listened and ranked two teams ranked in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) National Poll released on Monday. Ferris State, who are in first place in the conference with a 10-2-1 overall record and an unbeaten record of 7-0-1 in league games, climbed to 6th. Lake Superior State, who is 7-4-1 overall and 3-3 in the WCHA, received the 16th position in the latest poll. Three other schools are also listed outside of the top 20 receiving votes, including Bowling Green (5), Alaska-Anchorage (2) and Minnesota State (1).
Road Warriors?
Bowling Green will be back on the road for another away series this month. It will mark the third road series in November, which is the most of any month for the Orange and Brown this season. Bowling Green will head into Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. with a 1-4-2 road record. However, in those seven games, Bowing Green has played six of them against a ranked opponent and four of them against WCHA opponents. The final road trip of this month will mark the third time the Falcons will play a ranked opponent on the road in November.
Hat-Trick Special
Mark Cooper recorded a three-goal hat trick on Friday night (Nov. 22) to propel the Falcons to a 4-3 overtime win over Minnesota State University. Cooper recorded the game-winning goal with 31 seconds remaining in OT to hand Bowling Green their sixth win of the season, and fourth in league play. It marked the first hat trick by a Falcon skater since Dan DeSalvo's three-goal hat trick in a Falcons' 4-3 OT win over #2 Ferris State in the CCHA playoffs on March 11, 2012.
60-Point Club
Senior forward Cam Wojtala, who entered the season with 55-career points, tallied two assists over the weekend against Minnesota State. Wojtala's assist in overtime on Friday night allowed the captain to reach the 60-point plateau for his career. On the year, Wojtala's 61 career points are third on the current roster, with Ryan Carpenter (63) and Dan DeSalvo (62) just ahead. On the year, Wojtala has 3-3--6 with 43 shots on net. Wojtala is the third Falcon to pass the 60-point plateau since David Solway in 2010-11. Solway is also the last Falcon to pass the 70-career points, finishing with 73 points in 146 games played.
Back On The Board
Bryce Williamson, who won WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 22, recorded an assist on back-to-back nights last weekend. Williamson's two points against Minnesota State broke a five-game skid of not recording a single point after tallying 11 points in the Falcons' first seven games. Â
Burke At It Again
Sophomore goaltender Tommy Burke saved 21-of-24 shots on Friday night (Nov. 22), helping the Falcons come away with a 4-3 overtime win over Minnesota State University in their first game of the home series. Burke remained unbeaten on the season with a 4-0-3 record in seven games. On the year, Burke has a .907 save percentage and a 2.32 GAA.
Feeling Shorthanded
Junior forward Adam Berkle's goal 5:16 into the third period on Friday night (Nov. 22) gave the Falcons' a 3-2 lead in the game. It marked the second shorthanded goal of his career, all coming this season. On the year, Berkle has tallied 5-3--8 and is leading the teams with a +7 on-ice rating.
Berkle With Three
The 6-3, 193-pound forward from Collegeville, Pa., Adam Berkle recorded three points (1g, 2a) on Friday night. It marked the second time Berkle has recorded a multi-point game this season. In those two games, Berkle has recorded five points (1g, 4a) as the Orange and Brown have gone a perfect 2-0 when Berkle tallies at least two points in the same game.
Lending A Helping Stick
The junior class has played a vital role in the scoring department for the Falcons. The junior class has recorded a team-leading 34 points, good for 32 percent of the teams efforts. The junior class is also responsible for 26 of the team's 65 assists, helping the Orange and Brown score 42 goals on the year.
Falcon Power-Play Goals
Bowling Green entered last weekend without a power-play goal in their last five games, going 0-for-23 during that stretch. However, the Orange and Brown broke the skid with power-play goals in each game over the weekend. The Falcons are now 16.4 percent on the year on the power play, and sits at 83.1 percent on the penalty kill.
Month Of October
The Hockey team ended the month of October with an overall record of 2-2-2, improving their opening month record from last season's 1-4-2 record in the opening month.

Lake Superior State Last Week: Lake Superior split a par of Western Collegiate Hockey Association to Bemidji State over the past weekend. The Lakers defeated the Beavers on Friday night (Nov. 22), 3-2, to stay unbeaten (5-0-1) on a Friday night this season. Despite being outshot 32-26, senior goaltender Kevin Kapalka (4-2-1) made 30 saves for the Lakers and the team went 2-for-3 on the power-play.
LSSU fell to Bemidji State in the second game of the weekend series, 2-1. The Lakers went 0-for-3 on the power-play and went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, but dropped the game in overtime. The Lakers'Â netminder Kapalka made his second start of the weekend, making 23 saves on the night.
Lake Superior State's record now sits at 7-4-1 overall, and 3-3 in WCHA play. Bemidji State's record now stands at 5-7-2 overall, and 5-4-1 in league play.
