Cancun, Mexico – Bowling Green State University tipped-off the 2013 Cancun Challenge on Tuesday morning with a 67-45 win over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose in which the Falcons held the Blue Hose to just 15 made baskets on 30.6 percent shooting, while five players scored in double figures for BGSU in the first round win from the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico.
The win snaps a three game skid for the Falcons and pushes BGSU to 2-3 on the season, while the loss drops Presbyterian to 1-6 on the season.
BGSU was led offensively by five players in double digits, as Anthony Henderson had a career-high 17 points, while Cameron Black posted a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Forward Spencer Parker also had 12 points, while Richaun Holmes had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Point guard Jehvon Clarke just missed a double-double as he had 10 points and nine assists in the win.
Presbyterian was led by Jordan Downing's 14 points, while forward William Truss added 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
BG outscored Presbyterian 48-14 in points in the paint, 18-6 in points off turnovers and 8-2 in fast break points. The Falcons also forced Presbyterian into 14 miscues, one shy of the number of field goals it made for the game.
Bowling Green forced the Blue Hose into nine first half turnovers and held Presbyterian to just five made field goals over the first 20 minutes of play to build an early lead that the Falcons refused to relinquish over the 40 minute contest.
The Falcons flew out to an early 7-0 lead to start the contest on a jump shot from Clarke just three minutes into the contest.
Bowling Green pushed its lead out to nine at 10-1 on a free throw by Henderson before the Falcons' defense surrendered its first field goal of the game to Presbyterian, a jump shot from Downing with 12:09 to go on the game clock.
The defense continued to clamp down on the Blue Hose over the next five minutes of play, as the Falcons used its defense to propel its offense, doubling up Presbyterian 12-6 in points to take a double digit lead at 22-7 on a jump hook in the lane from Black with just over eight minutes to play before the half.
The Falcons held the Blue Hose to only three made field goals over the final eight minutes of the opening half, with all three of the baskets coming from long range. However, BGSU continued to pound the paint and hit the mid-range jump shot to keep its lead at double digits and take a 33-19 lead into the halftime break.
The Blue Hose refused to quit, as the visitors in blue scored five straight points out of the break to cut the Bowling Green lead back to single digits at 33-24 and force an early timeout from the Falcons.
Out of the timeout, the Falcons answered with four straight points which kick-started a 13-9 run and pushed the lead back out to 13 at 46-33 on an old-fashion three-point play by Parker with 12:57 to go in regulation.
Baskets from Henderson, Black and Holmes over a one minute stretch started a 19-5 surge by the Falcons who took a 24 lead at 65-41 on a dunk from the right baseline by Holmes with 3:46 to play in the game.
The two teams traded points down the stretch as BGSU led from start to finish in the 67-45 win.
It marks the second time this season in which all five of the BGSU starters have scored in double figures (Earlham) in the same game.
Bowling Green (2-3) will play in the championship game of the Mayan Division of the 2013 Cancun Challenge tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. ET. The Falcons will play the winner of today's contest between Georgia Southern and Oral Roberts.
